A wild, unpredictable and witty sci-fi comedy in which the survival of the entire human race hinges on the efforts of one man--Buckaroo Banzai. Buckaroo (Peter Weller) possesses an unusual number of professional skills--he's a neurosurgeon, race car driver, rock star, and comic book hero. While testing his jet-propelled Ford Fiesta, he drives through a rock, accidentally unleashing alien criminals from another planet who were imprisoned there. Suddenly, "Earth saver" seems destined to be added to Buckaroo's list of occupations, but not if evil Dr. Emilio Lizardo (John Lithgow) has his way. The hands-down greatest SciFi sendup of all time, and a terrific movie on its own merits!!
This movie is so brilliant and so funny that you'll have to see it at least twice to get all the gags. It played for over two years at weekend midnight screenings in Boston, and was sold out every show (principally because Harvard students loved it and saw it again and again). One reviewer wrote of it "[Buckaroo Banzai[ is paradoxically decades ahead of its time and yet completely of its time; it's profoundly a movie by, for, and of geeks and nerds at a time before geek/nerd culture was mainstreamed, and a movie whose pre-CG special effects and pre-Computer Age production design were an essential part of its good-natured enthusiasm." Years ago, when it was available on a pay-TV station in Los Angeles, I saw the movie about four or five times. Only recently I purchased it at eBay, and have seen it two or three times since then. Oink, snore!
There are a lot of really great movies that are no being produced on DVD or maybe older ones that never have been put on DVD. This one? It's a horrible movie. Last time I saw it must have been 1990 on a major movie cable network and had totally forgot the entire thing by the time I saw a preview online. Thankfully we can find used DVDs on this system! Sometimes it's the only way to get ahold where a rental would have been a far better idea. The movie was horribly written and made no sense at all... BUT the only really value to the whole project was the familiar faces. A pre-Back to the Future Christopher Llyod is just the start. Many are not very famous at the time. Some are annoying that never go away like Jeff Goldblum. Some are quintessential in cult classics like Highlander (the original) Clancy Brown. The story was rubbish. The only value was seeing many people and many are no longer with us. I could go my entire life without watching this movie again... and the DVD will be regifted to someone who may enjoy the same aspects I listed above. :-)Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Cult Classic
I had been wanting to get this again as I had had it on VHS years ago. Some quote from the movie came up and I was telling my wife about it and, to my chagrin, she had never seen it! However, in her defense she was a year old when it came out. The movie is funny, engaging and appropriate for all ages. Maybe not for all tastes but definitely ours. I mean, come on, a hero who's a surgeon, rock star, scientist and adventurer with a rag tag team of specialists? What's not to love. Sadly, after this Peter Weller's career was crushed by Robocop. I reccommend this flick for anyone who loves quirky, off beat comedy action adventures in the line of Big Trouble in Little China to Evil Dead 3 - Army of Darkness. I think this movie is a classic, and was ahead of its time back in 1984.

I had never seen this movie and bought it because I had heard the famous line, "No matter where you go, there you are." That quote was the only thing entertaining about the movie. No plot, no coherence, no acting, just a lot of scenes thrown together. At the end I was still trying to figure out who had done what to whom.
