About this product

Product Information

For his follow-up to his darkly brilliant debut, PI, director Darren Aronofsky chose to adapt a tough and meaty piece of work: Hubert Selby's 1968 novel REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, a dark spiral into the abyss of barren fantasies doomed to extinction. However, in Aronofsky's frenetic, visionary, unique, and disturbing style lies the perfect setting for this story of four people whose intertwined lives are filled with eternally hopeful despair. This is a different sort of horror film. Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto) and Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly) are lovers in Brooklyn with dreams of setting up a small business and spending the rest of their lives in love--their version of the American dream. The two are also desperate heroin addicts, a compulsion that darkens their lives and leads Harry to repeatedly pawn his mother's television. His mother, Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn), is addicted to television, which is why she keeps replacing the stolen set. One day she receives a call from her favorite show, the surreal TAPPY TIBBONS SHOW, and learns that she has been selected to appear on an upcoming broadcast. When she can't fit into her best red dress, her doctor prescribes diet pills (uppers), to which she swiftly and painfully becomes addicted. Harry's cohort, an intelligent hustler named Tyrone (Marlon Wayans), completes the foursome. With its unflinching dissection of addiction, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM is a psychologically disturbing, visually captivating depiction of lost hope. The last half hour of the film is among the most harrowing of any film ever made.

A modern day version of Romeo and Juliet.

The only other Aronofsky film I have seen is Pi. The director continues to act like a surgeon and opens up American culture for inspection. We're all in there somewhere. A better description, you ask, "And the children are all insane". Give it a view. By Coffee.

    drug abuse dramatized

Though the consequences of drug use by all 4 characters in Requiem for a Dream are horrific and horrifying, the movie still infuses the drug culture with a glamour and an excitement it doesn't deserve. Drug abuse is a sordid, rather stupid affair with behaviors that are vacant of any excitement or any drama. There is a lot of idle sitting, staring at the TV, maybe some pacing, plenty of nodding off or looking transfixed though the window blinds, paranoid. In the sweaty, nervous pursuit of the money necessary to buy the drugs; there is some action, most of it either petty crimes of theft or lying to extract loans from friends and relatives. In Requiem there is the glamorous high finance of drug dealing and beautiful people engaged in quirky, stylish self-immolation. There is the loss of limbs, extreme sexual abuse, avant garde hallucinations, poignant crying in jail curled up in a fetal position. It's a movie; so the self-destruction has to be over the top. There is no steady withering away of possessions, love, self-respect until the slow transformation of appearance and personality into a hollow shell is complete. No the real insidiousness of drug abuse -- the devolving into animalistic behavior -- is here portrayed as an almost heroic decline into a slasher horror movie where Freddy is heroin.

  • thought evoking and hard to follow because of it's complexity. not for casual viewing.

to watch and try to understand this movie you have to think harder. Very intricate with subplots within subplots. Dizzying task to keep up with all the intricate and well thought out concepts. this movie teaches a lot of things that would befuddle even an experienced psychiatrist. perfect job. I am impressed. I guess not all of Hollywood turns out pretty lousy movies. These actors and actresses really had to work hard and actually relied on talent and not all action sequences only. This shows that many Hollywood people actually have very strong minds. I appreciate the psychological aspects with their very twisting plots within plots. This movie made me feel good. Like I actually accomplished understanding a really hard subject. Or idea. Or a complex maze.

  • Great movie, but DVD not exactly what I expected

The title of the DVD should have said "Director's Cut" (since that is what I received) but didn't. I wanted the original version. Also, this DVD is pre-set so that it is in French. Not a big problem, I figured out how to set it to English, but still...

  • Terrific drama

Requiem for a Dream is one of my favorites, and I saw it when it first came out. It is a drama and some of its scenes are rough to watch. Highly recommend to all film mavens.
