Spectacular sound for under $200
I bought a pair of ATH-M50's seven years ago, and I used them every day until they sadly gave out. However, considering the amount of use and abuse I put them through, that is perfectly acceptable. Anyway, I received a brand new pair of ATH-40x's several days ago, and I can whole-heartedly say that these headphones are excellent and almost up to par with my old M50's. They sound incredible and produce excellent, deep, and immersive sound. The only caveat that I've encountered is the standard earpads. They are firm and uncomfortable for prolonged listening sessions, an easy fix with a bit of research. Moreover, their construction isn't as sturdy as the ATH-M50's; however, a little "self-fusing" silicone tape applied to the sensitive plastic joints can give these headphones a longer life and enjoyment for many years. Nevertheless, the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x Headphones are the best "bang for the buck" headphones I've ever owned.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Not the perfect headphones for a DJ
I purchase this headphone because it had very good reviews. But unfortunately is not the best choice of headphones at all. They are uncomfortable when In use. In able to listen to music clearly, you must turn on the volume pretty high. In addition, its bass is pretty poor. I purchase this product for about $80. Sound is good
Took these over to older lady's house who always listened to her classical on a Bose system and she wanted to buy them from me. I got her a set. Got my first AT 30 in mid 70's They were the most comfortable I ever had. I know sound. These are good fit for full phones and all around great sound. Some may say base is not strong enough, maybe they need to learn what the artist put down without all the boost and fake manipulation. These allow you to do that and hear all the music's detail. For those others, us an EQ and have what you want but every interface between you and sound there is a cost, you loose detail. Best Headpones!
I am a headphone collector and I must say I find myself grabbing these cans more and more. They are neutral, have a great sound stage, do really well with female vocals, and give a flat response...meaning Deadmaus5 sounds the way it is intended not colored in any way. Many headphones are V shaped in their sound reproduction. The highs and lows are the peaks of the V and the midbass is often overlooked or not detailed and muddy. These best many headphones costing 2x, even 3x their superior. If you really want them to shine hook them up to a DAC and headphone amp and you will be in heaven. My only consideration to make theses better would be a possible ear pad replacement. Other than that really close to perfect. Excellent Headphones
Over the years, I've used lots of headphones for radio production and natural sounds recording. The Audio Technica ATH-M40x is easily my favorite. The sound quality is excellent. I love the very convenient interchangeable cords. And the ear pads are not only very comfortable, but also far more durable than any other headphones I've used. My own pair is several years old but still as good as new. I bought these for a friend who is a professional video producer, and she loves them too. Can't go wrong. These are tight AF for under $100
I can't speak for any other model across the AT line-up. These rock!!!! I consider myself an above average listener. My interests cross many genres. I purchased the m40x because the 50's were just out of my range even with eBays thoughtful coupons, what sold me was all the reviews I read that these were tuned even across the spectrum. No worries though, they thump accordingly. The bass is perfect IMO. Base drums kick hard and tight and electronic low frequencies come in deep and clean. Rap, classic rock, electronica, 80's rock and metal sound AS THE ARTIST INTENDED with great fidelity. I'm hearing nuances I haven't noticed before. Track list I tested these with: Metallica: Fade to Black vinyl recording Mob Deep: Hell on Earth Sunz of Man: Soldiers of Darkness (dirty bass as intended and the surrounding music is legit) Warren G: Regulate (crisp clean and accurate thump) Megadeth: In My Darkest Hour (great acoustics and clean shred) Slipknot: Pulse of the Maggots. AFI: Aurelia (very high fidelity song, perfect) Kansas: Miracles Out of Nowhere Marilyn Manson: Cryptorchid Blakq Audio: First to Love Highly recommended for under $100. PS, don't be cheap. Go to the AT website and find the Authorised Dealers list, some of them are on eBay and sell for a few dollars more than the nobodies. Perfect for studio/recording sessions .... Flat response
The sound quality of these is just what I was looking for. They are flat response... they neither add nor subtract frequencies so they are the perfect tool for dialing in sounds during a recording session. .... they seem quite noise cancelling through the cans as well ... the spring in the head band is the only thing I might change if I could as it's quite strong .. not that it squeezes my head hard but that it lends itself to ear fatigue ... not the hearing part, just the physical ear starts to hurt after a while. .... however.... Great pair of value monitors or headphones
These headphones are great. Detachable cable, fairly comfortable pads, flat-ish sound. If you are looking for super heavy bass, these may not be for you. I use a system wide EQ to adjust all of the audio from my computer and have them very well dialed in but out of the box, they are a pretty flat pair of headphones.
