A fabulous document of Leonid Kogan playing a selection of encores with his unique passionate tone and flawless command. The Russian works are played with a delight and rhythmic understanding of the idiom that can't be topped. The other more traditional encores are played with the kind of intensity and beauty that remind me of Jascha Heifetz or Michael Rabin, who like Kogan, died far too young. Kogan also recorded the great concertos, and other more "serious" repertoire, but these recordings are a reminder of just how much musical pleasure can be squeezed into a 2 or 3 minute work. And the sound quality is far above many of the Soviet/Eastern European recordings of that period.
