A classic of Japanese sci-fi, THE MYSTERIANS combines the alien invasion and kaiju (giant monster) sub-genres. When the military investigates the puzzling disappearance of an entire village, they uncover the culprit, an enormous robot. They also encounter the alien Mysterians, who have left their own decimated planet seeking asylum on Earth. All they ask is a portion of land...and some Earth women to repopulate their species! Incensed, the people of Earth declare war on the Mysterians, which leads to the revelation of the aliens' sinister secrets. However, Earth stands little chance against the technologically advanced beings unless a group of scientists can come up with a super weapon to use against them. THE MYSTERIANS was the first widescreen and color film made by the Toho studio, and was directed by Ishiro Honda, who directed many kaiju and sci-fi films, including the first GODZILLA. Another Toho gem!
Not a Kaiju flick, but still a super entertaining movie from Toho studios all about an alien invasion of Earth. Of course it features many of the same terrific actors from the Showa era Godzilla films, like Kenji Sahara as the lead hero. Some great effects highlight this eerie tale too. When I bought this DVD I was wondering if it would play in my video machines. It played just fine. Excellent picture and sound quality. It even had extras. Commentary and picture gallery. Fantastic scifi film is ancestor of many kaiju and alien invasion films
Classic Japanese scifi from Toho Studios that is way ahead of its time. Clearly the ancestor of many kaiju and alien invasion films, this was made back in 1957 and still holds up very well today. Visual effects integrate perfectly with sympathetic characters well dubbed in English, and the music score is outstanding and adds a lot to the film. Great Vintage Sci-Fi.
Purchased this DVD out of nostalgia. I saw this picture at a theater when it came out in 1957. Of course, 60 years later it wasn’t quite as spectacular as I “remembered, but I really enjoyed seeing again.
