Did well to capture video from old camcorder

I purchased this item used without any software. I download the manual, current USB driver, EzGrabber capture software and Arcsoft ShowBiz Video editor from Diamond, but ShowBiz required a code. Running Win 10 64 bit. All I wanted to do was to digitize the clips, which worked well with EzGrabber. EzGrabber has 8 different settings to encode video which was not referenced in the downloaded manual. I experimented with the settings and chose 'DVD' which uses an MPEG standard format and requires about 60MB/minute. Also tried AVI which required 1.2GB/min (too large) and VCD (default) which was not as clear and very small (352x240). EzGrabber created a single file for each clip which was at 720x480 and got all the quality available out of my old Sony Video8 (analog) tapes. To play back on Windows Media player, I had to install Media Player Codec pack 4.4.1. EzGrabber: Pros: Easy to use (click to record, click to stop). Setup options can adjust brightness/contrast for low-light scenes. All encoding seems to be done in hardware (no high CPU load) Cons: Starting to encode when sound was on creates a loud 'burp', and some scenes had a few frames of 'tearing' which seemed to correspond to when I was moving while taking the videos. Also, had to set all config options whenever you start the program.

    Usless waste of money

I read so much about this device, and how good it is, that when I finally baught it I thought I finally found the ultimate solution to digitize all my VHS tapes. What I found out was : 1. Software is old, hangs, and even dosent function well with the device! Tried to update but couldnt. 2. After an hour of trying, I finally got the device to work... but the playback was full of hrizontal lines and distortions before it hung at some point. The sound was distorted. 3. The " button" is useless 4. Diamond support is vertually non existant. Total waste of cash. I threw it away and got a Hauppage Collosus 2. Runs like a charm.

  • Be ready for Trail and Error

After installing from disk you have to reinstall from an on line site to get the latest version. The directions are non-existent so it trail and error. Even after doing all of that to get it to capture I have you unplug it from the computer and plug back in, then an unrecognizable reversed green screen image will appear at which point you have to hit record , stop record, delete the file you just made and then and only then will you be able to see whats playing as a normal screen. Other than that, the software is worth the purchase, it at least is fairly easy to use.

  • Save your money

If you are looking for a video capture device that has a good picture quality this is not the product for you. Look its easy to install & setup but the video quality is sub par. Of course 20 yr. old VHS tapes are not the best quality but this system captures video in poorer picture quality than the existing tape. I should have done some more research because I am not going to waste the time to digitize the tapes with this system. I will buy another and will do my research this time around.

  • It's perfect for VHS to PC to make DVDs

Using it to transfer VHS tapes to my pc and then to DVDs. Had issues with the software that came with it, but I think it was just outdated. Went to the website for it and downloaded everything I needed. Can capture the videos and audio from the tapes, edit the videos and make DVDs super easy

  • Good quality, temperamental drivers

This is a good video capture card, better than the EzCapture cards that go for a lot cheaper but don't seem to work as well. The VC500 supports S-Video which is good as I'm digitising VHS tapes. The downside of the VC500 is that on Windows 10, at least, the drivers can be temperamental. I've had to uninstall and re-install them multiple times but at least they seem to be working now. You'll find the page on the diamondmm.net web site useful - it's not possible to post links here but you need something like wwwDOTdiamondmmDOTnet/kb/faq.php?id=10

  • Old software...didn't work.

I purchased this product to replace it on my new laptop after my older laptop died. I had used the capture device successfully for over a year with CyberLink software. The replacement included older, outdated software (ArcSoft Show Biz, and EZ grabber) which didn't work correctly. Initially the recording process seemed odd (wavy lines filling the screen) and replaying it revealed no sound reproduction...just noise. I spent over an hour on the phone with Diamond's customer support and tried countless maneuvers to make things work. Nothing helped, error messages continued and eventually, even though I could still click on the program to open it (complete with error messages), the program disappeared from my program list so I couldn't uninstall it. A system restore failed to help; my concerns about what the software was doing to my new laptop, I eventually reset it. I was incredibly frustrated by the whole process, although the tech support person (Charlie) was very helpful; he eventually arranged for a patch of Cyberlink PowerDirector12 (what I'd had before)....sadly that didn't support VCR and DVD players. I gave up and purchased replacement software from Amazon.com. The whole experience was awful.

  • Use with Win10 and VirtualDub2

I couldn't get the drivers to load properly on my Win7 machine. Microsoft eHome Infrared device kept loading instead of the proper ones. Fortunately I have a win10 laptop that is too new for eHome, so the drivers loaded fine there. Couldn't figure out OBS Studio, so using VirtualDub2.
