Product Information

Experience the thrill of airborne combat with U.N. Squadron for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. This title was originally released in arcades in 1989. Capcom then ported it to the SNES in 1991. In both versions of the game, you fight against the evil Project 4. The storyline is adapted from the Area 88 manga series that features the same main characters. The Super Nintendo port of the game contains all the same levels, characters, and enemies as the arcade version. It also features many new changes, giving diehard arcade players a reason to play this Nintendo game. You start U.N. Squadron for the SNES by selecting a character. Each character has a unique special ability. Shin has a more powerful main weapon than the other two pilots. Mickey can use two special weapons at one time. Greg can take more hits than the other pilots. After selecting your pilot, the game begins. U.N. Squadron by Capcom is a horizontal shooter. The screen will automatically scroll from left to right. It's your job to shoot down the enemy and avoid their bullets. You can move your aircraft anywhere on the screen to avoid enemy fire. As you play, you can switch between your primary weapon and special weapon at any time. After finishing the first mission, this Nintendo game lets you select your next mission. You always have at least two missions to select from at any given time. The areas are diverse, taking place in an array of environments. For example, one stage takes place in a forest while another occurs in a desert. You'll also find yourself battling far above the clouds and deep in the heart of the ocean. The graphics in U.N. Squadron for the Super Nintendo are colorful and vibrant. The bullets are easy to see on the screen, letting you dodge them easily. This game throws a wide array of enemies at you, coming from the ground, the sea, and the air. On the ground, you'll need to fight against tanks and turrets. In the air, a deluge of jets and helicopters will try to shoot you down. In the water, you'll need to avoid boats and submarines. At the end of every level is a massive boss. These bosses will unleash massive numbers of bullets at your plane. Every foe you defeat in U.N. Squadron for the SNES rewards you with money. Between each stage, you can use this money to buy new special weapons or purchase a new aircraft. Each plane in this Capcom SNES game lets you use additional special weapons. For example, your new plane may come upgraded with a gun that shoots a barrage of missiles instead of just one at a time.U.N. Squadron for the SNES was released before the advent of the ESRB, so it has no official rating. However, the title is suitable for all ages as it features no suggestive themes or violence. If you're looking for a challenging SNES title with a lot of replayability, you'll love U.N. Squadron.

  • An obscure shmup gem

The gameplay is not quite as unforgiving as Gradius or R Type, it gives you more opportunities to succeed than most shooters. You can choose how you go about each mission with special weapons, but balances out by having you purchase them. Any leftover specials at the end of a mission is actually paid back to you, yet if you die, you lose the money you paid as well as the weapons. There's two difficulty modes, 3 different pilots, 8 planes to upgrade to, and at least 10 or 11 different weapons. It really creates a lot of replay value. This is one of those games that watching game play videos will help a lot in deciding if it's your kind of game. For shmup fans, I'm confident you'll love this one of you have not played it before!

  • Shoot them before they shoot you, and get paid.

I never knew one of my favorite arcade games was on SNES. Back in the day the quarters dropped like crazy for this two player game that lit up the skies, albeit on a well lit screen. With many different weapons to buy, you pilot a plane as one of three mercenary pilots and roast the baddies from a desert outpost called Area-88. Several scenarios await, from on high in the clouds, through canyons, around a palace, and of course, the obligatory enemy military base. The Super Nintendo version of this game is very good, with features not found in the original arcade version, mainly the piloting of different kinds of planes, each with their own attributes and weapon systems capabilities. What is missing from this, a rather glaring omission, is two player mode, along with one of the pilots lacking his two-way vulcan cannon, which made him a great choice for beginners. Other than that the adaptation is terrific, and the game is thoroughly enjoyable if you like shooters. The game is pretty hard, but you develop some intuition and before you know it, you've made it. The music is excellent, a product of its time, and the controls are fairly smooth. One of the best five shooters for SNES, easily. Check it out!

  • Get Ready For Liftoff!

Fun game overall and challenging. There are lots of play options so it keeps a good amount of variety. Sometimes it gets the dreaded SNES slowdown when there's a lot going on on the screen but it's not enough to discourage me from playing it. Overall a fun game at a good price.

  • Amazing!

Got into retro gaming to replay all the games that came out when I was a kid. Kept seeing UN Squadron on YouTube as one of the best “shoot em ups” after playing gradius 3 and I couldn’t be happier. Just wish I would’ve discovered it sooner
