  • Fabulous instrument

I've used my trusty old Shure P58 since the 70's and thought it was just the best, then recently did a show with the Beta 87A. I have always considered the microphone to be an instrument that I play with my voice, and a whole new world has just opened up before me! This mic has made the changes that age brings to a singer's voice a fun new challenge. I do wish that it had an on/off switch. Note that your volume knob may need to be lowered to avoid feedback.

  • I think this is my all time favorite voc...

I think this is my all time favorite vocal microphone. The sound is rich and transparent. There is no comparison between this and (for example) the SM58 - which, of course, is an old war horse of a microphone. Do be aware that it requires phantom power because it is a condenser microphone. But when I hear the voice through this microphone, I'm always amazed at how good it is.

  • Big step up from SM58

This mic has great sound, bright and clear, comparable to my favorite studio condenser. I bought it for onstage vocals but I have a feeling it’s going to get a lot of use in my recording arsenal as well. Also very lightweight, and it looks good too! This is a huge step up from my SM58, and since I don’t tend to abuse my microphones I’m hoping it won’t matter that it’s probably a little less indestructible.

  • Very even voice through baritone range

The Shure Beta 87A mic has very even response and works well for my baritone range voice. I used it in a big band setting last night and it cut through the band well. I also use the mic in a smaller variety band and it seems to "play well" with a fairly wide range of other vocal and instrumental mics. It does not matter in my particular application, due to the fact that I have it on a stand, but this is a feather weight microphone. An important FYI on this mic is that you will need phantom power to make this mic work. The 48 v power built into my little 4 channel Mackie mixer worked quite well. Check your sound board to be sure it has this feature or be prepared to find some other way to meet this need.

  • Smooth

Very nice top end. Captures subtle details while having that presence that cuts through a mix. Big improvement over the SM58, which is especially important if you're recording live stuff and can't use a big honkin valve mic due to logistics, this will give pretty decent results without the feedback. Also is quite durable and a pretty good bang for the buck.

  • Shure Beta 87A

For the price this is in my opinion the best handheld condenser cordoid microphone. It has the punch along with the crisp high end I am looking for in a microphone. Just check out the specs and you'll see why.

  • Delivers the nuances you've been missing

Used one of these years ago, had lost it in the shuffle (was stolen) at The Bitter End in NYC - and after over half a decade and many, many gigs later I finally decided to take the plunge and get another one. They are GREAT for solo/duo acoustic gigs - which is mainly what I use it for - but are so sensitive that they can pick up whatever is behind them - including drums (acts almost as another overhead if you're not careful) - but in a quiet situation they absolutely shine. The response is STRONG and FLAT, filling in the spots that other mics (Senn 835, Senn 845, SM 58, Beta 58 - all of which I own) miss. Gone are the EQ carving and fiddlings; in place I've got a full, clear vocal mic. LIve condensers take a second to get used to but they are dynamite in the right setting. My Beta 87 as ordered here was shipped quickly and arrived in perfect condition, just as advertised. Very pleased.
