War and Remembrance Complete Miniseries - Strengths and Weaknesses

Terrific 12 DVD version of the epic 1988 miniseries. The very last of the big budget, multi night, veteran character actor based miniseries. Tremendously entertaining with memorable characters obviously based on real World War Ii personalities as well as historically authentic recreations of Hitler, Stalin and Roosevelt. Great value for the price. My only criticism is that some of the actors were 15-20 years too old for their roles, and looked it. Robert Mitchum especially turned in a good performance but he was 64 in real life while his character was supposed to be about 45. It took me out of the show for a while until I suspended disbelief and enjoyed this great series for what it is: An epic, mostly successful recreation of World War II causes, leading figures, key battles and aftermath. The Holocaust scenes featuring John Gielgud and Jane Seymour are especially riveting and not for the faint of heart. The big budget was well spent and Dan Curtis' direction was solid.

  • Top critical review

Good followup to the Winds of War

There was never any question that I liked the story. I haven't watched the whole series yet (I have watched the series before from the library). I watched a few selected DVDs to make sure it worked OK, correct format, etcv. The picture is fairly grainy, but good enough for my purposes. I wish it was a little better quality. But, I can live with it.

  • Great Mini-Series, all that I remember and more!

Seeing how it's been almost thirty years since I saw this, I can't believe how well it's held up! I miss the original actors from the first series Winds of War, but the new ones add a different dimension. I really enjoyed watching the tension between the characters and the action during the war scenes. Robert Mitchum and Polly Bergen really make it all work. It's always great to see them on screen. Watching it now makes me wonder what would have happened if there would have been a third book. Buy this you'll enjoy it if you're a fan of World War II literature. Herman Wouk wrote and weaves a great saga!

  • War & Remembrance DVD boxset

This boxset arrived carefully double wrapped in bubble wrap. It comes with a sturdy plastic case inside the outer sleeve. This set was also sealed & official commercial release. Each disc is securely anchored to the inner plastic sleeves. Disks were in pristine condition. Now, the picture quality is outstanding, with vibrant colours, sharp & clear. Sound quality is Dolby digital 2.0 stereo, which is expected for a 40 year old TV mini-series. Each disk is a chapter, with the 14th disc behind the scenes special features. Incredible value considering the extremely attractive pricing. Highly recommended purchase!

  • Superb Sequel to Winds of War

Herman Wouk's powerful, sweeping epic of WWII continues without a hiccup, although a few of the roles have been cast with different actors. Battle scenes are vivid and intense. The human stories play out against this backdrop and somehow avoid (for the most part) soap opera cliches and manipulation. The movies of Winds of War and War and Remembrance make me want to read the books again.

  • I really liked War and Remembrance!

Great Epic Story (about World War 2 events) called "The Winds of War" (miniseries) with the second and third (final) segments of the story continued in this miniseries called "War and Remembrance". Great acting by Robert Mitchum, Jane Seymour, John Gielgud, and a LOT of Hollywood Stars including a young Sharon Stone. Writing was great from Herman Wouk's two epic novels and Cinematography is great, too. These DVDs are Standard Definition (720x480) 4:3 Aspect Ratio [normal for 1980's vintage Broadcast TV}]. The video and audio quality on the disks are excellent, and I would highly recommend both miniseries for a weekend or two of "Binge Watching"

  • WITH PREQUEL, "WINDS OF WAR", THE BEST WWII MOVIE SERIES OF ALL-TIME !!!

I remember watching each & every episode of WINDS OF WAR when it debuted on ABC back in the early 1980's. I was ecstatic when I learned that the sequel, WAR & REMEMBRANCE, was to go into production. What I didn't know was that I would end up in the movie!!! In 1987, I was stationed aboard USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) as Repair Division CPO. The production crew was aboard for several days shooting scenes. I was supervising the maintenance of a fire station in the vicinity of gun turret #2 when I was captured in a scene on the main deck in DVD #10 of this series. This series is a Great Value, because of how it makes your soul feel...which is priceless! The complex nature of the story, combined with the diverse cast, make it appeal to a very large demographic. I was skeptical at first with the casting changes from Winds of War, but fell in love with the replacements as the series rolled along. The research for this series was handled spectacularly. The winding of these characters into history was masterfully done. I rate this series right up there at the top with all-time classics such as YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, starring James Cagney. That is hallowed ground!

  • War and Remembrance, Grabs the viewer and holds till the end.

One of the best mini series of WW II ever done. Should be shown more often. Character development exceptional, and very easy to comprehend. Whether the segment is dealing with actual combat, or the plight of all Jewish people, you can't help but be involved. Everyone should have an opportunity to view this testament.

  • Very accurate subject matter

#1. This in the Original version/Quality, is getting harder to find. #2. This set is of very good quality. There is a problem in that the #9 and #11 disc are reversed, but we gpt it figured out.

  • Grand Nostalgic Trip

This miniseries means a lot to me as the sequel to The Winds of War, which I watched with my parents when I was a boy. This one is grander in scale and contains many of the same actors as the first miniseries. It is incredibly nostalgic for me to watch this and view a world that is gone. This also contains Auschwitz scenes that are the most harrowing scenes I've ever viewed on film. It's a quintessential 1980s miniseries that pulls me back to the WWII years and to my childhood, when I first watched it.
