Experience the charm and wit of Charlie Chaplin with "City Lights," a treasure of silent film comedy, now available on Blu-ray from the Criterion Collection. This Blu-ray edition is a must-have for film enthusiasts and collectors alike, ensuring a place of pride in your movie library.
Perhaps one of the greatest romantic comedies ever, and arguably the pinnacle of Chaplin's Tramp character. The restoration looks amazing and the vintage soundtrack holds up very well even though it's in mono. But the main reason I'd recommend this film is I can't remember the last time a movie had me laughing so much throughout it only to put a big ol' lump in my throat and make me well up by the end. Charlie's honest expressions let you really feel for this downtrodden hero. A poor nobody who has lucked into a rich, drunkwether friend. Using his newfound access to wealth to help take care of and woo the beautiful and blind love interest. Whose performance is so quietly sad in moments it's almost haunting. If you enjoy silent films it's a must see. Truly one of the last of it's kind.
Picture far better than previous released Blu-Rays from Kinowelt/Arthaus and Park Circus. The 4K transfer gives surprising detailed scenes on my 64" Plasma TV, even taking into account the source age.
