It is certainly more manageable, too, for listening. The composer even conducted the Moscow Philharmonic in a 1938 recording of the second suite from this ballet. Prokofiev had indeed spent many years on the score and, like other Soviet composers, had to contend with the shifting moods of Josef Stalin and his comrades.
