Product Information
Though in essence a real-time strategy in a fantasy setting, Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns includes aspects of robust empire management and extended character development to provide a fresh combination of several familiar gameplay elements. The title's Kohan are a race of immortals, though a recent cataclysm has all but destroyed their civilization and erased memories of their collective history. Many members of this enduring race live among regular mortals, blending in with their societies and following their customs, while others limit themselves to more exclusive communities.

Players lead one of the four surviving Kohan factions in a quest to remember an ancient past and unravel the mystery behind the cataclysm that destroyed the last age. As the game progresses, additional immortal Kohan heroes may be convinced to join the player's cause and lend their special abilities to the elite companies they lead into battle. Each hero has a name, portrait, history, and status. While the particulars of the development of these heroes are largely predetermined, in-game choices can influence which heroes are available and how quickly each progresses from "awakening" to "ascension."

The player's faction must develop many military units, both magical and mundane, to build an army that can protect the homeland and conquer foes. Units are commissioned in companies, each featuring a captain, two support units, and four soldiers in the front line. Different combinations allow for a wide variety of companies in terms of speed, defense, and styles of attack. Companies can be grouped into larger regiments, allowing simplified (though less precise) control.

Though commanded through its company, each unit functions independently according to its individual abilities, fatigue, and morale. Another aspect of gameplay relatively new to real-time strategy is the use of supply zones, which extend around all allied cities, healing units and replenishing the ranks of the companies stationed within them. Battle-weary armies must rest "in supply" to return to full strength.

Resource gathering in Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns is more similar to that of a turn-based empire building game than that of most other real-time strategies. The player manages five main commodities, each of which is required for the support of different unit types. Commodities are not gathered by worker units. The focus is on achieving a balance, rather than exploiting one particular ore patch or mana reserve then moving on to the next. To claim a steady flow of resources from a mine or tree grove, the player must extend the empire so that these assets are within the supply zone of a city or outpost.

By default, this game is played at a slower pace than many more conventional real-time strategies, allowing time to manage growth, maintain a balanced economy, and keep an eye on the Kohan heroes. Yet in spite of the hallmarks of classic empire building interwoven in the game's resource management and city development, Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns also offers the pressurized dynamic of do-or-die battles that must be planned, engaged, and managed as the real-time clock ticks on.Product Identifiers
