Loved every minute!
I've only recently discovered this series on Netflix and then found it was being shown on the Sci-fi channel. Loved every minute of it so had a search for the DVD's and found almost all the box sets on ebay! Only series 5 in it's entirety is missing; for some reason it's in 2 separate packages, so I'll have to get it elsewhere. If you want something faithful to the legend, don't watch Merlin. If however you want a highly entertaining, sometimes funny, often heartbreaking 'sword and sorcery' experience, then this is the series for you. For a budget TV show the CGI is pretty good, particularly the Great Dragon who is voiced by the wonderful John Hurt. Colin Morgan is exceptional as a very young Merlin, having to hide the magic he was born with whilst putting up with the ill-mannered, headstrong Prince Arthur. Given the role of manservant by King Uther (the excellent Anthony Head), they eventually form a close bond but magic is outlawed in Camelot so Merlin must find ways to keep Arthur safe whilst not revealing his gifts. Bradley James plays Arthur exactly as you might imagine a privileged teenager would behave, eventually growing up as he becomes king and finally becoming a responsible man. More notable names in the series include Emilia Fox (Silent Witness) as Morgause and Charles Dance as a really scary witch-finder. Richard Wilson (One Foot In The Grave) is perfectly cast as Gaius, Merlin's guardian and mentor. Other well known faces include Pauline Collins, Frank Finlay and Tom Ellis (Lucifer). This series is not short on acting talent! Five series later, the story comes to an end. It would have gone on for another 5 if I'd had my way! The journey it takes you on is breathtaking; if you can suspend belief and let yourself be drawn into Merlin's world, you may never want to leave.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned
