In this gentle comedy, veteran actors David Carradine, Rip Torn, and Bruce Dern star as a trio of retired sea captains and confirmed bachelors in turn-of-the-20th-century Cape Cod. Housework is piling up at the home they share, and the men concoct a plan: send for a mail-order bride to do their cooking and cleaning. Jerry (Torn) loses a coin toss, and he dreads being the groom-to-be. But when the beautiful Martha Snow (Mariel Hemingway) arrives, one of his roommates may be tempted to renounce his single status in the name of love. Blackmail and arson add spice to this seaside-set romantic comedy, which also stars Charles Durning and John Savage.

    Family Friendly

    The Golden Boys is a family friendly film w/beautiful scenery, quality background music (provided by Jonathan Edwards) & a seasoned cast of characters. The story has a bit of a twist from the typical story of this era, in that it is NOT filled w/expletives, nor would a parent need to sit at-the-ready to hide his or her child's eyes from explicit sex scenes. There aren't any super heros, either. It's just the story of some old seadogs who have grown tired of doing housework & have decided to rope some unsuspecting lady into coming to this quaint little community to marry one of them. No, it wouldn't win any Oscars & it could use a bit more gumption, but it won't leave the kids bouncing off the walls due to too much excitement nor waking up in the middle of the night from nightmares about evil vilans coming to get them. At the end of the film, one feels like a nice, simple story has been told. Is there anything wrong w/that?
