Product Information
The ProSafe 8-port switch provides power and data from a single point, using Power over Ethernet (PoE) over a single Cat-5 cable. The user can benefit of the eight fast Ethernet ports for any 10/100 Mbps link and four of these ports can supply industry-standard IEEE 802.3af power. The advanced auto-sensing algorithm gives power only to 802.3af end devices, so the user doesn't need to worry about damaging proprietary PoE or non-PoE equipment. In addition, it discontinues the power when PoE devices are disconnected. The ProSafe switch automatically determines PoE requirements, speed, duplex and cable type using AutoUplink. Furthermore, these devices are optimally installed on a ceiling or high on a wall, away from most electrical outlets. This allows for flexibility in situating devices where AC power is difficult to access.Product Identifiers

Simple, effective, compact, inexpensive, dummy proof.
I own a couple. They were all sourced "previously owned", and they all work, no hiccups. It's one of the few true dummy-proof networking products out there. A compact, simple, inexpensive, 8port self-managed (old IT hands sure appreciate it) 10/100 switch allows you to expand or extend connectivity, from a integrated router/modem, which often have only 4-6 ports. It self-detects "uplink" (the ethernet wire you bring from router to switch), which spares having to manually select or toggle anything, or patch uplink cables. Nifty! Particularly useful if you got a media stream box, game console, bluray player, audio-video receiver, tv, the other game console and [insert whatever other stuff here] hanging from a single spot. "Why not simply use wi-fi?" you ask. Because wireless fails, hiccups, software-crashes and is prone to interference from an a/c unit, microwave, or pretty much anything metallic or high-current in its path, that's why. Wired works, period. Always RTFM. Specific product gripe: NetGear did not standardize power supplies for this product. POE switchs worked out great
