Product Information

Legal series are usually serious affairs, filled with intrigue and drama a la L.A. LAW and THE PRACTICE, but this David E. Kelley creation strayed from the formula with its mixture of quirky comedy and romance. Calista Flockhart stars as Ally McBeal, a young, miniskirt-wearing lawyer who finds herself employed at Cage/Fish & Associates, a law firm where her childhood sweetheart (Gil Bellows) and his pretty wife (Courtney Thorne-Smith) also work. Sounds normal enough, but when you add in wattle-loving partner Richard Fish (Greg Germann), socially awkward (but successful) boss John Cage (Peter MacNicol), and a number of dream sequences, ALLY MCBEAL gets delightfully strange. Ally and her coworkers fought for a variety of oddball cases and causes, but the most interesting part of this Fox dramedy was what happened outside of the courtroom. In the first season alone, Ally is arrested for assault and theft after fighting with a fellow supermarket shopper, John is busted with a prostitute, and Richard makes an inappropriate move on Janet Reno. This collection includes every episode from the show's debut year.

    One of a Kind

    I watched the series when it was on TV in the 1990s. Basically, it's a soap opera about a young lawyer who is quirky, neurotic, prone to anxiety attacks, who fantasizes about virtual dancing babies & other things, all the while being a loving, loyal friend and amazing attorney. Her boss & colleagues are just as quirky as Ally, which ensures there's never a boring moment. I was so hooked on this show that I named my cat Ally McBeal! Do yourself a favor & watch this series, but beware: you'll find yourself humming the theme song for MONTHS afterward.
