Good performance and features, not a great firewall feature set, DNS issue- discovered work around

I have own several wireless routers over the years, this was a recent upgrade from a TP-Link (which seemed to need rebooting every couple of days (won't buy TP-Link brands again. Netgear has been a solid product line I have used for years with low end switches. This Netgear is behind a Century DSL Link Router " ZyXEL PK5001Z " . I ran into a strange issue with DNS resolution, I normally set the DNS servers entry with the two DNS server addresses that the DSL router identifies, this then is used by DHCP (to issue IP addresses), I have always done this in the past and this is how you do it in large enterprise networks. What I found was that things have apperently changed with the newer equipment. I found that to get the network stable, I had to make sure that the DSL router was acting as the DNS server, then also set the Netgear to point at the router for its DNS, next set the Netgear IP address as the DNS provider for the DHCP network, immediately the network stabilized and has been up for a month now with out needing a reboot. My guess is that typical approach to DNS has been modified in the Firmware of newer products now to improve DNS auto switching to more dynamic DNS servers on the Internet to reduce service tickets.

  • Oldie but a goodie

This series of router seems to be easier to pick up on the used side of things than other routers with a gigabit switch built in. I needed this to function as a wired gigabit router and it does the job quite well. It works out even better in my case not having any external antennas (V1 only) since I wasn't utilizing the wifi. Other versions of this router have external antennas if that is needed. The wifi works fine even though I turned it off after testing it. I have an older netgear router (10/100 switch built in) that functioned in this capacity and played well with my main TPLINK AC1750 router, so after trying a Belkin ac1600 with a gigabit switch that did not play well with my main router, I looked for a netgear that would fit the bill since they were going for much more reasonable prices than TPLINK. This router seems to also be supported quite well by custom firmwares although I had issues using LEDE to connect with my Verizon FIOS ISP, ended up reverting back to factory firmware, using the handy dandy recovery TFTP mode, and it works like a charm (should have just used it as I received it, but I'll never learn). I'm assuming the other versions are of similar high quality. Anyway, I highly recommend this router.

  • Netgear WNDR3700

An oldie but a goodie. Very easy to set up. I can plug in my USB drive of movies into the router and watch them in either of two bedrooms or the living room via the Sony Blu-Ray players in those rooms. Highly recommended.

  • GET THIS IF...

If you like Netgear products, this is the one to get, can be had for a decent price used and can still be purchased from remaining stocks new. This is the version two (v2) model and has the most ROM in it to load your firmware. Whether you buy new or used IMMEADIATELY flash this router with DD WRT router firmware. Its actually a very simple process but read up before you do if your not familiar with installing third party firmware. Be aware, there are something like 5 versions of this router/switch/wireless access point available though make sure you have the correct firmware, its tough if not impossible to unbrick one of these things. Great signal strength, great function, great throughput, extremely flexible consumer use product(especially when running TPF),even out of the box, it does very well.

  • Forget WiFi Range Extenders

Get yourself a second router! No more dead spots and get the actual speeds you pay for, extenders only give you about half what the router broadcasts. This was a perfect find. I only wish I would've stop wasting money on extenders long ago.

  • WNDR3700 Netgear Router

I had another one just like it. It had good range and didn't have to reset it. New one is good but not as good as the last one. But I would recommend it for a replacement. Both of them I bought used.

  • Worth the money.

This is definitely an improvement to the house. I was using a router that i paid the same amount as this one from a store and their is such a big difference. I pay for 100 MB from my provider, the only time that i would get close to that with the old router from the store is being directly connected via Ethernet cord. Over wifi i was luck to hit over 25 MB. With this router I am hitting a littler over 100MB Directly connected. Now over wifi I am hitting around 85-95 MB. This is totally worth it. With this router I will mention that the firmware on my device has been flashed to run DD-WRT, which I completely recommend. Due to the fact it has so many more options and way more control of your router. Hope this helps anyone looking to purchase.

  • Cheap, reliable and ultra effective.

Have owned (and still do own) a number of these over the years. With everyone wanting the latest and greatest, these are always showing up on ebay dirt cheap. They are reliable, easy to mod (with DD-WRT) and they provide very good performance (near 100mbps true performance).
