From Electro Harmonix; Tone aficionados kept telling EHX’s Mike Matthews about a pedal that had achieved a lot of buzz because it was only obtainable at an exorbitant price. That pedal was the KLON CENTAUR. A believer in bringing great tools to starving musicians, Mike tasked his trusty team to create an affordable alternative, and that is how the SOUL FOOD was cooked up. The SOUL FOOD delivers transparent overdrive with great touch and response. Its circuitry features boosted power rails to provide abundant headroom and increased definition. Best of all, you don’t have to be a rock star to own one!

    An Awesome Affordable Overdrive

The Soul Food from Electro Harmonix is a killer sounding overdrive. At higher gain levels with lower volumes it can help you get a nice colored tone that also works great to cut through a mix really well. On the other hand, when it's used with the volume past twelve o' clock and the drive really low it can really push your amp to break it up more, giving you natural tube overdrive. I love it!

    Not bad .

Well made by a long track record company . As usual the video sounds much better than the extensive experimenting search for the sweet spot . The Dunlop Jimi fuzz was easier to find the sound . It will probably work for a lot of ears out there .

  • Best *Affordable* Overdrive (IMHO)

Great sound. I use the Overdrive range much more than the Distortion range. Makes my old Princeton sound a little meaner, but without the buzzy distortion that a lot of overdrive pedals have (at least the ones I've heard and can afford). I leave it ON just about all the time, tweaking the Drive knob as-needed. Just bought another one, for my son. We both like these a little more than my old faithful Tube Screamer. Only one caveat: (with mine, anyway) if the switch inside the box is set to 'true'--which is true bypass (which is a good thing)--there is sometimes a big 'pop' when you stomp the pedal on (which might be hard on the speakers). But, IF yours does that, and you don't want that 'pop' (I didn't), then you can simply switch that switch to the 'buffer' setting...and the pop is gone like a cool breeze. I don't know if the one we just bought here on eBay (which is a couple of years newer than my first one) has that same issue. But, to me, it's totally worth potentially losing a very slight bit of transparency to avoid that 'pop'. Or maybe someone has come up with a good mod. Either way, it's one of the most useful pedals on our boards. Love it!!

  • Soul Food is Food for the Soul

Great as a transparent boost in front of a dirty tube amp !!! Dial up the volume to hit V1 with a hotter signal then bring in just a touch of gain It's like having a volume knob on your guitar that goes to 11 !!! Not the greatest dirt tones, but not bad either ... Tone control lacks a ton of range, but works well enough ... Comes with the AC adapter which is very cool Hard to beat for the price !!!

  • The clean OD I've been looking for!

excellent clean overdrive, plenty of headroom, it does very well in keeping the note definition while cranking up the gain, does sound very natural (unlike other OD pedals I've used). I use this in my signal chain right after my morning glory pedal and it sings beautifully! it also pairs up very nicely with a boost pedal right before it in the signal chain. highly recommended!

  • Perfect for tone freaks

The soul food is an excellent transparent boost. It has a very warm tube-like sound if you keep the drive knob low. It is an excellent pedal to run after an overdrive or fuzz to fill in some mid and low end. However, I personally think the higher drive settings sound a bit thin; I almost never roll mine past the 12 o-clock position. I would not recommend this pedal as a stand-alone overdrive, but this is a great boost pedal for a tone nut. I love it for blues tones. For the price, I think it is well worth the money.

  • Good natural sound

I got this as a compliment to my Fulltone OCD - and like that pedal, it has a very natural sound, like it's just over driving the amp without coloring or compressing. It's a little happier sounding than the OCD, but actually can sound very similar if you set it that way. With the drive control turned down, it will give a nice, clear boost. If you crank it up, it's surprisingly fierce. Try it.

  • Classic Fuzz, New Tech

You can't really go wrong with electro-harmonix. The nano brings back the classic 70's sound with a bit more mid-range than the standard Muff. It's kinda reminiscent of the original silver box.

  • Crystal clear or really gainy

This is a great pedal to start with, but the JHS mods really help balance it out. I’m using an ES 335, which is very bright, with an old Epiphone Pathhfinder amp. I can go clean, warm, tweedy, or full gain without losing the midrange & bottom.

  • Great tone for the price

Nothing fancy, just a good, solid overdrive that provides excellent tone throughout the range of settings, from clean boost through to nice and crunchy. It seems to be built to take a fair bit of abuse too.
