  • AWESOME Flick!

Departures is one of the best movies to come out in years. Not just Japanese movies, any movie from any country. Culturally, having some knowledge of how historically the Japanese feel about people who deal with the dead brings the movie to a different level. Deep rooted in Shintoism, those who deal with the dead are looked down upon greatly in society. So when the main character begins work preparing the deceased for entombing, his friend's reaction would seem strange to a westerner but completely understandable to someone from Japan. Departures is truly a work of art. Highly recommended to anyone who likes a good drama.

  • Beautifully presented

Cello player's orchestra folds. No job. Takes a job in helping families prepare for the cremation of their deceased members. His new job affects his family. It affects him. It is a story about acceptance. Beautifully told story. Subject matter is one difficult to deal with, but is done so with utmost sensitivity. Highly reccommend.

  • Not a sleeper!

Absolutely must have movie. It is complex, but not due to the storyline itself. My family loves this movie, one of my daughter's favorite movies, tough to find in US DVD format. I can watch this over and over and it never get old, just a really interesting storyline about life and death and those situations in life that are unexpected. Think of a job that you may be in that you never thought you would be in, but for whatever reason it "works" and was unexpected. Multiple storylines going, but all have to do specifically with the main character. Watch it and be entertained with a good story. Love it!

  • A beautiful movie with many memorable scenes. You'll be thinking about this film long after seeing it.

One of my favorite films, full of insights that made me think, and started interesting conversations among family and friends. I buy inexpensive used copies off eBay to loan out and give away.

  • Great character study

This is a great movie that shows that jobs have meaning and can help both the person doing the job and the recipients of the service. Sometimes you don't realize how important simple things can be or how important dignity is.

  • Unusual, hard to find, beautiful DVD

This rather expensive DVD is about death and Japanese traditional funerals, in which the deceased is discreetly, ritually prepared for burial in front of the relatives. This may sound morbid, however the movie is about gaining wisdom and growing in love. It is emotionally evocative. There is beautiful cello music in the background and the scenery is stunning. This award-winning, powerful movie is one you will want to share with others from late adolescence to elders. Fully recommended.
