The show stars Gabriel Byrne as psychotherapist Paul Weston, and follows him over the course of a single session with a patient during each episode, concluding with Paul visiting his own therapist, Gina, played by Diane Wiest. Constantly enmeshed in the suffering and neurosis of others, Paul's own life can take a backseat to those in his care. Harder still, is exiting shrink-mode when he's with Gina--letting her take the driver's seat for that one hour a week while he takes the spot on the couch.

This first series finds Paul returning to therapy himself, with an old colleague, Gina (Dianne Wiest), helping him come to terms with his mounting professional dilemmas. Like a series of one-act plays, most of the show's dialogue-heavy episodes take place within the confines of Paul's office. During its original broadcast schedule, each patient was 'seen' on a different night, five nights a week, offering viewers a unique experience of following their development. This collection presents the drama's complete first series.

Title says it all
It's difficult to describe. Season 1 some of the patients you just wanna scream at, others you want to give them a good hard smack and some you just wanna hold till their problems are gone. Gabriel Byrne & Diane West are really really good & Michelle Forbes as Paul's wife, well she's a much underrated actress (she was in TV series 24) I've ordered the 2nd season on the strength of season 1 👍
