The final Inner City Unit album, The Presidents Tapes is also up there with the very best music the band ever made, a tightly focused but, simultaneously, deliciously loose collection of riffs, rhythms, and -- best of all -- ideas that thoroughly corral all the promise that the band ever radiated without losing sight of the anarchy that was its stock in trade. Nine tracks open with the brooding "Stonehenge, Who Knows?" and peak with "World of LSD," a song that might well be the closest your ears will ever get to experiencing that particular subject. The fact that the band would not follow this album up with anything more substantial than the Blood and Bone EP (home to a startling version of "Hurricane Fighter Plane") is a tragedy, although Nik Turner's own voyaging in the years since then more than compensates for the disappointment. ~ Dave Thompson
