Product Information

Bringing John Berendt's international best-selling novel, MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL, to the screen must have been a challenge. The book is essentially an anecdotal travelogue of the fascinating city of Savannah, Georgia. The filmmakers decided to add a character, John Kelso (well played by John Cusack), a writer from New York, who's meant to represent Berendt's point of view. They also put most of the focus of the narrative on the murder trial of local millionaire socialite Jim Williams (the redoubtable Kevin Spacey). This is slightly problematic in that Kelso, a mere observer, now becomes the central character of the film. But director Clint Eastwood (straying from his usual milieu, and, atypically, not appearing the film) and writer John Lee Hancock still manage to capture the quirky spirit of the book. They're greatly aided in this regard by the lush images of cinematographer Jack N. Green and the detailed work of production designer Henry Bumstead, who create just the right atmosphere for the small city and its environs. The strong cast, including actual Savannah residents such as sparkplug transsexual the Lady Chablis, makes the film an enjoyable idyll in a strange yet welcoming place.

Target Audience movie
This movie is much misunderstood by anyone not from the Deep South where this movie has definitely nailed it! I was born in New Orleans and grew up in Natchez, MS. Being from one of the old, well-respected families I must say that for me it was like a flashback of what I grew up seeing and being a part of. It was familiar and comforting to me. Had I not come from that culture depicted in the movie I would not believe the depiction of pomp and pageantry, voodoo and supernatural occurrences. It's an accurate depiction of the world as I knew it ~ and it lives on today. I love this movie, but it isn't for everyone.

Well done film.
This is a great movie. Well acted and directed. The story is very intriguing and keeps you interested. It's a serious film, but it also has some funny moments. Lots of different characters to keep the movie from feeling stale. Based on the book of the same name, but as normal, the movie strays from the book in certain aspects. Not really a problem though as it never strays too far. The book was based on a true story in Savannah, and the movie is filmed in Savannah with some of the real people playing characters. Lots of scenic Savannah in this film too, so if you have every visited the city, you'll recognize the locations. I always watch this movie, if I'm headed back for a visit.

Great story, colorful characters.
Loved this movie. It kept me entranced with its mixture of fact and fiction. Great cast of characters, including some of the actual residents of Savannah. Savannah, being the oldest city in Georgia, has a lot of history including the magical touch on voodoo in the movie.

A great Who Dunit
This is a really good movie with an excellent cast and fine acting. The plot is good and interesting with several twists and turns. There is a bit of the occult and voodoo but it is done very well and is believable. As an added benefit you get to see some of the old beautiful homes and mansions in New Orleans. Kevin Spacey and John Cusak are both great in this movie.
