  • Excellent initial learning context but a bit pricey for the short and only introductory content

The book is excellent...provides vocabulary, which is put into context via stories. The historical aspect of the Roman Empire is covered in these stories. I would thoroughly recommend it but the cost I felt was a bit pricey as the book is only very thin - 157 pages but for the price i expected a thick book. Having said that, it is full of picturesque illustrations of story lines and includes much of Roman history such as history of virgil and the Aeneid etc. There are dialogue sections from notable latin scripts and questions at the end of the stories to enable the student to test their understanding. The Reference grammar section at the end contains tabulated "NOUNS" (1ST, 2ND, 3RD Declensions....Adjectives 1st &2nd, and 3rd...adverbs...numerals 1 to 10.....declensions of unus, duo, tres....preposition small table ...pronouns tabulated....verbs table...the 4 conjugations plus a mixed conjugation (the verbs are only conjugated in the present active though (infinitives and imperatives are included. Irreg verb table sum, possum, eo, volo, nolo (nb only the present active conjugation is provided.....alongside the imperative and infinitive....a short list of conjunctions... (i guess book 2 would contain more extensive info including other conjugations and different voices and moods. I was lucky to receive this book for $40 as it is retailing around $60....do your searching as sometimes it comes down.

  • Superb for the self learner

I was sick and tired of buying Latin learning books to find they were little more than heavily academically written reference books with few exercises. Oxford Latin offers a course, based around practice, with much of the linguistic/grammatical jargon cut out, exposing you to different features of Latin in every section, and understanding the grammar through practice alone. This is what every Latin learner needs.

  • Simple but not trivial

It is an excellent start for young Latin students. The texts in Latin and the historical context in English are simple but acceptably detailed, and introduce the young reader to some popular topics of the ancient world. NB. This textbook is not enough for independent students who are not initiated to Latin pronunciation by an expert guide. I have listened to the CDs - which are sold separately - and they are not that bad for an English readership: highly recommended for independent beginners.
