About this product

Product Information

For the photographer who specializes in portraits and still life, the 105 mm Nikon DC-Nikkor is an ideal choice for a DC lens (defocus lens). Because this is a DC lens, the Nikon DC-Nikkor allows the photographer to choose how much emphasis the background or the foreground of a photo should have. This gives the photographer the ability to control which area in a photo should have a blurred effect.  Blurring images is way to make elements in a photo appear softer or coarser. This feature is in addition to the potential that is already contained in an f/2.0 aperture lens such as the Nikon DC-Nikkor. Such creative control often lends itself well to both still life and portraits, though all forms of photography can benefit from the features of this Nikon lens. Built of rugged metal and plastic materials, the Nikon lens uses an independent ring in order to change between manual focusing and automatic focusing.

Nikkor 105mm F2 DC, the sharpest!

The Nikon AF 105mm f/2 DC is one of Nikon's very best lenses. Nikon has always made extraordinary 105mm lens, ever since its. The Nikon 105 DC is among the sharpest lenses ever made, and it's built pro-tough out of metal in Japan, not out of plastic in China. The Nikon 105 DC has an almost identical bigger brother, the 135mm f/2 DC. This 105mm f/2 DC is as sharp, and often sharper than Nikon's 105mm f/2.8 AF-D MICRO-NIKKOR, and this DC lens has the advantage of adjustable and superior bokeh. The built-in metal hood is superb: it locks in position by screwing-down. Even without the hood extended, the glass is well recessed into the barrel. You have to move a ring to get to manual focus mode, and once you do, manual focus is fantastic.

A lens you have to know how to handle. It's not as incredible as I'd read.

As soon as I got the lens, I tried it and I didn't like it. The images were blurred and sleepy. My boyfriend was able to calibrate it and adjust it from the camera menu, currently I have it on a D7000 and after taking a lot of pictures, it worked! Finally, the automatic focus focused right where the focus point was, improved the sharpness remarkably and we learned trial and error how to handle the DF. I didn't like it: 1. In autofocus mode it sounds horrible, too much noise. 2. It has its science to know how to calibrate it and handle the DF. 3. It doesn't have VR, so in low light you should use flash or a tripod. When there is a lot of light, when shooting at high speeds there is no trepidation. 4. The parasol comes incorporated to the neighborhood of the lens, to remove it is a little hard, it locks sometimes. The sharpness is great, unbelievable. The sharpness is great, unbelievable.

  • The best a portrait lens can get

This is my favorite portrait lens. It is one of if not THE sharpest lens that Nikon makes. I personally don't use it for speed / low light photography but as a studio lens. I do not play or take advantage of Defocus (Bokeh) Control. Shoot mainly at F8 in controlled light environment. The lens produces the sharpest, most detailed images while also producing pleasing, slightly reddish, warm skin tones. Lens built like a tank in an old school heavy-duty metal body. It's not overly long or heavy though. It has a built-in twist-on/off hood. I honestly wish Nikon made more lenses of this kind of build quality / sharpness / compactness and relative lightness.

  • Classic unmatched by todays best

Nikon has always had those special lenses that will never be replicated or bettered. A simply perfect optical formula for its intended purpose is an art that has been lost in modern, plastic, high volume lenses. While these modern lenses can also be well made and optically exceptional, a solid, reliable, and proven lens like this will live on well past the failure of the latest and greatest ultrasonic motors. Pros: perfectly constructed, optics are unmatched for the intended use, works on almost any decent Nikon, will last forever with basic care and storage. Cons: some focus hunting in low light-very rare, but noted.

  • Tack sharp portrait lens.

The Nikon 105 F/2 DC (defocus control) lens is one of the sharpest lenses Nikon makes. Perfect for portraits, it allows you to selectively throw the background out of focus for a very pleasing background effect. The large aperture allows you to shoot in low light levels as well. I'm very pleased with mine.

  • A lot of portrait bang for the buck

I had to think on the value question. The Nikon 105/2.0 DC is a great portrait lens--and I got it for a very good price, so it was a great value for me. I have lusted for this lens for many years. Most of the time, this lens can be quite expensive lens in the used market (and we won't talk about the new price). I'm still learning how to use the defocus control, but that's a nice challenge. I certainly recommend the lens--just shop carefully!

  • A true "3D-HIFI" lens

Cons: Lacks sharpness compared to modern lenses; requires a very fast shutter speed or a tripod to avoid blur. Color fringing is not very well controlled. Pros: The bokeh is very creamy; there is no annoying swirly bokeh. smooth transition to out-of-focus parts. In a simple word, it's really "3D-HIFI". You need to make a choice, and I chose the beautiful bokeh because it can't be enhanced afterwards. This is a portrait lens, and people don't care if the photo can count the pores on their faces.

  • Great portrait lens

One of Nikon's best. Gives you the ability to defocus foreground or background. Super sharp. Works great with either manual focus or auto. Film or digital. Not too bulky. Unique lens

  • Great lens. It is a keeper.

This is a gem of an F-Mount lens. I use this for both portraits and food photography. Yes, it is durable. I dropped a camera with this lens on it from about 24" and both landed on this lens hood. Not a good feeling. But since bending the lens cover back as best as possible it has been working fine with amazingly soft bokeh.
