AMAZING LENS
Wow. Just wow! This lens is absolutely amazing. The crystal clear optics on this 85mm prime are unbelievable and the silky smooth bokeh created at or below 2.8 is addictive to look at (especially at f/1.2)! Seriously... I'll never forget the first picture I snapped with this lens and I could instantly tell the purchase was well worth it! The lens is large and heavy (no surprise there) so make sure you have the room to pack it and the desire to hold it on your camera body. The focus is slow so I wouldn't recommend it as an action-oriented lens, but it is PERFECT for portraits, group photos, weddings, functions, or anything like this. You'll also need to stay about 3.5 feet or further away from your subject to focus and at 85mm, you'll need some working room to capture some shots (and even more room if you're working on a sensor smaller than full frame)... if you work in tighter spaces, you may want to look at the 50mm 1.2 by Canon as a solid alternative. This lens is definitely oriented towards a specialist; not a generalist, so if you really want phenomenal, blown out backgrounds for particular photographs, look no further than this lens. Choice Lens
I rented this lens and immediately fell in love with it and knew I had to get one. Yes, it is heavy but I love the weight and it's nicely balanced on my 5D IV and to me it feels like driving a muscle car. You have that very large aperture that in bright sunlight you can stop motion at 1/8000 at ISO 100 or you can stop it down just a bit and really get such nice sharp images. Yes, AF is slow and I probably did not need it but there are maybe 2 out of 10 shots I take with it that I just keep going back to over and over as the drop-off when it works and the right settings gives it this illusion that I just can't get with my other lenses. Also, as I am leaning more toward pet photography and children the 85 is really a great focal length and I know it would be fantastic for baby and newborn shots with that extreme blur you can get. As Ferris Beuller said" t is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up". I did insist I find a used one and found one for 1100 and it's perfect.

Dream Lense come true!
Love, love, love this lense. I have drooled over this lens for a decade, but couldn’t justify the price. Even, when I worked at a camera store during Canon’s annual bonus employee discount. I thought I’d scarcely use it, so I didn’t bother. I could not have been more wrong; I regret not purchasing it a decade ago, why did I wait so long (so, stupid). I’m a sucker for a big aperture, the depth of field is oh so sweetly shallow, and it perfectly fits my shooting style (if Canon still made lenses with apertures bigger than f/1.2, I’d own them all). This bad boy has replaced my 24-70 f/2.8 L’s illustrious position of being stored on my camera’s body. This lense was worth every penny and it has almost made me enough money to pay for itself. I love this lense, I totally get lost staring into its beautiful glass. If only, I could find more appropriate words for how amazing this lense is. PRO: Everything. CON: Nothing. Lens That Lives Up To The Hype!
I have finally gotten my hands on what has been called the holy grail of portrait lenses. This actually completes my "Holy Trinity" of Canon primes: 35L, 85L, 135L. To start, since I already had the lenses mentioned before, this lens did not blow me away, but really lived up to the expectations I had. It gives me more breathing room than the 135L, and gets in much closer than the 35L. The bokeh is exactly what I have read about: creamy, soft, dreamy, melted, etc. Although it doesn't have weather sealing, it is built like a tank! The filter thread is metal, and since it extends out when focusing, it is a good thing if you happen to bump into something. It is very heavy, almost like the 70-200 f/2.8, but the shape of it makes it feel very nice in hand. Many reviews on the web mention slow AF. One has to keep in mind that this is not a sports/action lens. It is a portrait lens, first and foremost! To achieve accurate focus at f/1.2, the lens has to perform deliberate, precise calculations. I took a picture of a small house fly sitting on a post. Only a thin ribbon, maybe millimeters wider than the fly were in focus. Overall, I just LOVE the images this lens produces straight out of camera! Colors and contrast are simply fantastic. The bokeh really does have a 3D effect, and gives a very smooth transition from in-focus to out-of-focus. It is sharp, almost edge-to-edge even at f/1.2, and that f/1.2 allows once to shoot in near darkness.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

The lens is ONLY ideal when shooting portraits shoots. It is very challenging to shoot at 1.2 and get a tack sharp photo. You will definitely want to invest in a good tripod to help with these tight shots... The focus is also slow, but if all the stars line up just right, you can get some incredibly good shots. For me, I have found much greater results shooting this lens at 1.6, 1.8 for some great stuff. The bokeh in this lens will melt away everything when set at 1.2... Even with its donwsides, I would still purchase this lens again and simply reserve it more so the studio room.. Expensive but worth it.
I was not sure to move from 135mm f2L to 85mm 1.2L. Almost double price difference. But I'm happy I did that. If you can manage distance than 135mm F2L has good value and have same sharpness and best bookeh. I'm not technical person, I just shoot pictures and compare the results. If you are wedding photographer than this lens 85mm 1.2 L should be first choice. If you are hobbiest than 135mm F2L is smart choice. If you concern about external beauty like how it looks than 85mm F1.2L is your choice. If money is not issue than 85mm F1.2 L is the best. Each penny worth it. The Result is amazing. Super sharp, great color and good bookeh. This is best for wedding portrait pictures. And indoor family friends pictures. Very smooth, fast, soundless auto focus. Exterior is beautiful. Canon portrait lens
I am an amateur photographer at best. I have a older Canon rebel camera. Have invested in 2 lenses that are higher end to help my poor skills. This lens does an incredible job to provide professional looking portraits without trying. Amazing Lens - Favorite Portrait Lens
This lens is amazing. Shooting at 1.2 is great and this lens is razor sharp wide open. Makes for some amazing images. If you're on the fence about it you need to get one or borrow a friends and try it. Focusing can take a little time to get used to but once you figure it out it's simple. Big and powerful
I would like to say a few things. The autofocus is slow. It's not very slow, but it does get annoying (only at widest aperture). To combat this what I do is use Magic Lantern software and turn focus peaking on. This method is much faster than letting your autofocus sit there forever trying to figure it out. MTF Charts show this lens performs a lot better at f8 but who cares about that when the results are still pleasing and let alone UNIQUE on f1.2 Haven't had the lens that long to rate its durability but it is their top end 85 so one can only expect durability.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Great lens, good image quality, slow auto-focus.
This lens is well known for it's image quality. So far I'm happy with what I'm seeing, and I'm happy that I made the purchase. The auto-focus on this lens is also well known - for it's slowness.
