About this product

Product Information

Nikon, the leader in precision optics, 35mm and digital imaging technology, offers the ultra-compact AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G lens. Compact and lightweight with a comfortable, well-balanced feel, this wide angle-to-portrait zoom lens is ideal for travel landscapes, scenic and general family photography. Excellent optical and mechanical performance in a very compact size was the design objective for this Nikkor lens. To achieve this, Nikon designers addressed several key design points. Using the latest computer aided techniques, the optical design was optimized for a balance of size, weight and image quality. Mechanical construction takes advantage of strong, yet lightweight materials that are resilient and good looking.Another key element considered in the design of the AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G was built-in aperture control, a feature on the newest Nikon SLR cameras, which does not require that the lens have an aperture ring. With this point in mind, Nikkor G lenses omit the aperture ring, resulting in a lens that's more compact and lighter. This approach offers photographers all of the advantages of Nikkor optics without loss of performance for their new Nikon SLR cameras. Picture-taking with the new lens will add excitement to any photographer's repertoire. Capturing beautiful portraits at 80mm and moving through normal to wide for landscapes and other wide view subjects provide dynamic range and enhance picture-taking opportunities. The AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6G features one aspherical lens element with a high-performance Nikon Super Integrated Coating that delivers superior color reproduction, while minimizing ghost and flare. A rounded diaphragm opening with seven blades makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural and the aspherical lens element minimizes distortion, especially at the periphery area, for superior optical performance. Nikon's AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-4.5G lens is sure to become a valued addition to any photographer's bag.

  • "Better than it has any right to be"

Why the quotation marks? Because the great Ken Rockwell said it before I did. In fact, because of his review, I bought this lens - again and again and again. I sell cameras. This cheap little plastic body lens can be had on ebay for about $40 or so. It pairs very well with the Nikon D70, and it takes better pictures than any cheap little plastic bodied lens has a right to. The f/3.5-5.6 version is pretty good too, but not as good as this little gem. Buy one and enjoy it. One note of caution: This is an AF lens - it doesn´t have a motor built in, so you won´t get auto-focus if you have a D50, D60, D3000 series or D5000 series camera. If that´s your situation, there´s an easy solution. Put said camera up for sale on ebay and buy a D70, D80, D90, or D200 (one of the great bargains right now). If you want to make the guys with a D7100, D600 or D800 envious of your photos, buy a Fuji S5 Pro (or an S3 Pro if you´re on a budget). This lens, and all Nikon lenses from Ai on forward will function flawlessly with those cameras.

  • good, lightweight full frame camera lens

This is a good full frame camera lens. The build is plastic and hence lightweight. The max aperture at wide angle (28mm) is f/3.3 instead of f/3.5 which is a standard that Nikon has adopted. Its lens mount is plastic which makes me doubt its long term durability, would have loved it with metal lens mount. Another great feature is that this lens does not extend much when you zoom all the way from 28mm to 80mm. Lens sharpness is acceptable. I use it occasionally with Nikon D7100.

  • Cheap construction-GREAT optics.

It is plastic construction and the retainers that hold the lens to the camera body often get broken. That is about the only minus for this lens. For all its cheapness of lens body construction, this is one of the sharpest lenses made by Nikon in its era. It is a perfect adjunct for my Nikon Df because of its light weight. The Df is a pretty heavy camera and the light weight of this lens makes it a little easier to tote around for any period of time. I have trained myself to not handle the camera by the lens, which is a pretty common practice among some. I always pick it up by the camera body and not the lens. Considering how inexpensive this lens is these days I would call it an excellent buy.

  • Nikon Zoom-Nikkor 28-80 mm F/3.3-5.6 Aspherical AF G Lens

This product was the best choice I ever made after mine broke accidentally. I was bummed out till I got on eBay & searched for a similar one & found this one for cheap. It's quality is great & sharp. No dents & no scratches. As soon as I got it I went on a photo shoot adventure. My pictures are crisp & beautiful. I'm a satisfied happy customer. No complaints ^_^ (A+++++)

  • Great value for the price

This little lens is a great value for the price. It's light and it's plastic, but the images are sharp and clear. It's great for a walk-around lens when you don't want the weight of a heavier zoom. It has a decent range and while it's variable aperture of f/3.3-5.6 is a little limiting in low light situations, it works fine in most instances. I use it on a Nikon F100 35mm film camera and on a Nikon Df. I have better lenses but use this for social media photos and they look great, especially with a few Lightroom adjustments.

  • Great lens, just a but fragile

These are great, cheap lens. Nice range for street, portraits and even fairly wide angle on s FX camera. The only bad thing is the plastic bayonet mounting ring is plastic and easy to break and not easily to find replacement part, otherwise be careful and get great photos

  • Good cheaper lens

It works great on my D7100. Fast focus, sharp image, and good color. It's not as well built as many of my other lenses, but I didn't pay hundreds of dollars for it either. It seems like a decent general purpose lens. If you're thinking about getting one, please note it will only auto focus on cameras with the built in focus motor.

  • It punches waaaay above its going price

Let's be honest as to what this is - it's a very cheap lens. Adjust your compass since I think it would be unfair to compare it to, say, a Nikon 24-70. But for what it is, it's rather fantastic. I haven't taken all that many shots with it on my D750 but I plan for it to be my workhorse for my next vacation on both my D750 and my N80. It's lightweight, sharp enough, and was cheap. And sure it looks kinda goofy on my 750 but I think that's part of the fun! In the shorts I did take, I compared it to my Nikon AF-S 60mm and, yes, the 60mm is sharper, but it wasn't immediately apparent until I started pixel peeping and even then, the results where I would use them likely (brightly lit day) were very respectable. The lens isn't going to win any awards, except maybe for cost. And that's the point. And, to me, that makes this lens rather fantastic. And if you do manage to break it, well you were only out a fraction of the price of a new, expensive, Nikon lens. All told, if you already have a 24-70, then unless you plan on abusing your lens, no sense in getting this. But if you are like me that tends to prefer primes but needed a zoom for on the go, this may very well be your lens!

  • Excellent Value

So far it works well on Nikon D810, but not fully or carefully tested yet. This particular lens came to me in mint condition, functions well, and I have made several hundred images with it, with no obvious problems. Some of them, at least, have proven to be very sharp. It is lightweight and a has a very useful range for general work. Recommended.

  • Fun Lens

This is a fast lens and if i have a need of a cheap lens due to conditions that may cause damage to the lens this is the lens i can afford to lose. I used this on a Nikon D7100 and for what i needed it did the job. It is no way to be confused with a new VRII lens but this cost less then $45
