About this product

Product Information

This Nikon Nikkor AF-S lens introduces an ultra-wide angle design that produces a smaller image circle (the size of the image that is projected by the lens on to the sensor), which in turns allows for a smaller lens diameter and yields optimal image quality from center to edge to corner. The Nikon lens design allows for wider angle-of-view with optical characteristics optimized for Nikon digital SLR camera sensors. The 12 mm-24 mm f/4.0 DX lens features G-type zoom and extra low-dispersion glass elements (ED) for minimized chromatic aberration, as well as internal focusing (IF) for smoother focusing and body balance. This Nikon Nikkor AF-S lens provides precise distance information for flash and ambient light exposure processes, as well. The 12 mm-24 mm f/4.0 DX lens is equipped with a Silent Wave Motor (SWM), enabling ultra-high-speed autofocusing with incredible accuracy and quiet operation. Three aspherical lens elements minimize distortion on the Nikon lens and a switch enables toggling between autofocus and manual focus with almost no time lag. The lightweight design of the Nikon lens allows it to fit comfortably on compact digital SLR camera bodies.

  • Best DX non-variable aperture wide angle lens for Nikon bodies in my opinion.

Had one of these a few years ago. Sold it. Regretted it. Also owned both versions of the Tokina equivalent lens. They are good, but I prefer the Nikkor. Not worth the “new” price, but a good lens at a used price. Also good for the 18-24 mm range on FX bodies.

  • Crazy sharp.

If you are looking for a fixed aperture for your Nikon DX camera, this is the one. Yes, there is the newer 10-24 that goes 2mm wider, but it also comes at the price of (mostly correctable) unnatural distortion on the wide end. Just released by Nikon is the new 10-24 with VR, but do you really need VR for an ultra wide lens? The 12mm is surprisingly wide with very little distortion. Unlike other lens that only zoom to 16 or 20, 24mm gives you flexibility so that there is no need to swap lenses so often. In the end, I want fixed aperture. Nikon has seemed to move away from fixed f/ for their DX lineup. Fortunately, even though this and the few other fixed f/ lenses are 10+ years old, they still sell them. There must be a reason. I imagine the thought is only the more demanding users will want fixed aperture and those users are (mostly) FX users. If you're still reading this review, you're probably the few like me who prefer pro level lenses on your DX body. This lens pairs nicely with the 17-55 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8 lenses. I just wish Nikon made this lens in a 2.8 version for DX. Happy trails.

  • awesome lens at a bargain price

Optics are clear. Exterior shows very little sign of use and seems well taken cared of. I love the color saturation and unbelievable sharpness I get from this lens. Although it didn't come with the lens hood, I got a great deal. Shots were taken with a Nikon D90 with no filters and unedited except for the cropped shot of the ship to show how sharp it is.

  • Happy medium

Good solid lens for the price. My teenage photography student was delighted to see what a true wide angle lens could capture. It’s not a cheap lens by any means, but I didnt have to mortgage the house to buy it. A big step up from any lens that comes as part of a kit with a camera body.

  • Great Lens

Great lens! It's F/4 which is something to consider. I haven't tried it for astro yet but I'm not expecting anything great. For very wide, sharp, landscape images, I think this is the best DX lens available hand's down.

  • Great lens , not at retail price

This Nikon aps-c sized wide angle lens is great it goes from 12-24mm constant f4 . It's sharp at all focal lenghts . It has at 12mm a very slight barrel distortion , but very slight . Cromatic aberrations are all most none existence . It has good contrasts. I had the Tokina 12-24mm which is as sharp but has more distortion and a lot of cromatic aberrations and at the long lenght its contrast is very poor . I didn't like it because of it's contrast This Nikon , where it is most sharp is from 20 - 24mm . So much so that it can compete with a good prime , that doesn't mean its not sharp lower , it is , but the extreme corners at 12mm at F4 are a bit soft . Stop it down to 5.6 and it is tack sharp . This is a excellent lens and it has the Nikon gold trim indicating it is one of Nikons upper level lens . Its construction is very good , compact , sturdy and heavy fore its size . The only problem is its price when comparing it to others which are all less expensive and some equally good . If you can get one at discount priced , 500 or less its a steal considering how good it is .recommended .

  • Great seller. FAST delivery! A++++

Bought this item and advised seller that I appreciated a fast delivery because we were leaving for a trip. It arrived two days later; he'd paid more to ship than I'd paid for shipping. Just as a courtesy to help out. Great seller!
