Old airport express - Works well, but setup is challenging

These old styles Airport Express units are at a great cost point right now. However, Apple has decided to exclude them from their continuing software support. If you have a mac newer than 2013, you'll actually have to get a PC and download the older version of Airport Utility to get the unit set up.

The good news is that once you do so, the unit works great. Best of luck!

by TOP CRITICAL REVIEW

This is the cheapest way to stream music from an iPhone or iPod, but it's a bit of a pain to configure at first.

This product is outdated at this point, and the wireless router/cable modem combination I get from Time Warner Cable is much more capable than this thing is. However, this thing is extremely useful for one purpose: wireless music streaming from an Apple device.

iPhones and iPod touch devices, as well as Mac computers, or iTunes on a Windows PC can all stream audio to Apple AirPlay- and AirTunes-certified devices. This is the device that introduced AirTunes (which became AirPlay when it was expanded to the Apple TV and video support was added), and it remains very useful as a digital audio streaming target. You can buy a Raspberry Pi and SD card and set them up to do the same thing, but it's going to take a lot of effort and time to initially set up (and you better be familiar with Linux or willing to learn!), or you can buy an outdated AirPort Express for a fraction of the price, set it up, and play music through it.

Here's the catch: you need extra software to initially set it up (Apple AirPort Utility), and if you're doing so on a Mac you'll actually need to download a modified, *older* version of AirPort Utility, as the latest versions completely remove support for these old guys. In fact, it may be easier to set up on a Windows PC. That's why I'm knocking two stars off, because Apple when decided to stop supporting these guys they decided to also prevent the older software from running normally, preventing them from being reconfigured on a Mac.

But once it's set up you'll be so glad you did. Make any speakers wireless!

Easy to use

You need the older Airport Utility 5.6.1 not available with Yosemite or El Capitan but the installer can be found on a search. Search for the downloadable .dmg for easy installation. I love this because there are no cords and works great as an extender.Read full review

No longer compatible with modern MacOS/iOS, total dud.

I bought this thinking I’d be able to set it up like any other AirPort Express only to find out after many failed attempts that Apple dropped support for this router in MacOS and iOS. So now I’ve got a shiny white paperweight. Bummer.Read full review

Too old for current network systems.

I have used Airport Express for many years with good results. I purchased this to add to my network. It was previously locked to someone else's computer and the current utility will not update it. I bought it very cheap and got what I deserved. Quit selling these things with no support from Apple!Read full review

Not compatible

This device is not compatible with this El Capitan version (10.11.6) of software, at least according to the error message upon 3 attempts to install it.

Cannot comment whether it is a good quality product or not since it will not install. It LOOKS like the other AirPort Expresses I own and use successfully but just won't install.Read full review

AirPlay Rocks

A low cost Airport Express turns a set of computer speakers into a nice wireless sound system, for the garage, or your workshop or even your family room. Use your iPhone, IPad, or iPod or any of the kids can bring their own device with their music as well. Uses your WiFi or wired network.Read full review

Just what I needed

It took a while for me to set it up. But it works great. Only way I know how to use iTunes airplay.
