First gen Airport Express

I bought this to create Wifi speakers out of my old iPod doc speakers using the aux cable. It took a little while to figure out setup, but after I figured it out, it works fine. Only 4 stars since it is difficult to create a multi speaker network from your iphone compared to chromecast audio. It is easy from your laptop.Read full review

Needs old Airport Utility software to work.

Current Apple Airport utility doesn't support these old AirPort Express devices so you need to source an airport utility app patch or have access to an apple machine with the compatible Airport Utility. I was looking to replace a failed unit and find that it's still a good way to get a mini RCA output connection out of AirPlay to my kitchen stereo. Because this device needs old apple network software to make it work I suspect there's a possible security risk to your wireless network. good for remote speakers

While an older product, it is great for my use case as airplay speakers. It is compact, plugging directly into an outlet. Setup is easy, and now i can choose various speakers throughout my home. For this purpose the price is quite good, especially compared with the more expensive later models. Be careful to avoid the previous model, A1084, as you will not be able to set it up with current versions of airport utility. I've only used the Airplay feature of this router. It was easy to configure even using a Windows PC.
I configured the device as a wifi client of my existing router, and activated Airplay.

Great value, robust router

I use several Apple Airport Expresses (A1264s) for a couple of purposes. In two applications, they convert wired internet from a cable modem to a wireless access, and two other applications to add wireless speakers to an existing wireless network. In all cases, I have not had any problems, they work reliably (never have to reboot), and are easily configured from the Apple Airport utility. I set them up for my elderly mother and mother-in law, and they just keep working with no maintenance. I've found them less expensive than paying for a wireless cable modem monthly fee, or buying a separate music streaming device. I stream music to them from other apple devices (iphone and macbook) using Apples Airplay.Read full review

Totally worth 4 bucks for a cheap airplay device

If you are getting a older one from 2004-2005, you will need a older version of airport utility, but if you get the one from 2008 or newer you dont need a older versin of Airport Utility, but I paid 4 bucks for it and It works great with my 2 5th gen time capsules and 1st gen Time Capsule. I only really use it for a airplay streaming device and it works great at that even though the one I got is from 2004, it works wonderfly with no problems, even in 2020. The best part is a lot of wifi extendors when you set them up you loose network speed, but not the case with this thing- i still get 50mpbs with no problems. In short if you need a cheap wifi extendor that can do airplay this is the one to get. You simply can not beat the price, and the quality is excellent, and it looks like a little power adapter that looks great plugged in to your wall.Read full review

Makes a great AirPlay receiver

These older units make great, cheap AirPlay targets. I'm using this to drive an old stereo amplifier for my basement rec room. Airplay Adapter

I have a 1970’s receiver that works like a dream, but obviously it is unable to connect to my phone wirelessly. This product has a headphone jack which allows you to connect any speaker to it and add it to your wireless network, effectively able to play my music from my phone through the WiFi to my old school receiver. Apple made this great entry level router that puts out a good signal, plugs directly into the wall so no power supply and cord to deal with.
