Configure using Airport Utility 5.6.1 for Windows, not mac or iphone

If you need an audio AirPlay device that outputs mini Optical Out this ancient Apple device might be your only choice unless you find and pay for an older AppleTV.

This Airport Express is not supported anymore but I was able to configure it by searching for "Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Windows" from support apple com and installing the application on a Windows 10 machine.

Do not bother trying to get the Airport Utility for any macOS version to work, I had no luck. The iOS Airport Utility doesn't support this device anymore either.

PS: this is an old AirPlay 1 device. You cannot simultaneously stream to both it and a newer AirPlay2 device like a Sonos or Apple HomePod.Read full review

Music streamer

This older design unit runs a little hot, but for my use it works well. I switch it on with my small stereo and it works well. as i listen to streaming music in my garage for an hour or two occasionally. If you were to need to operate 24/7, the newer design by Apple would run cooler and probably be more reliable.Read full review

Reliable for home network

Great addition to my apple home network. Apple has discontinued this product. Great find on eBay at reasonable price. Added to existing network in matter of minutes and it extended WiFi coverage to another area of house. Working flawlessly with my other airport devices .

Works great replacing my previous similar model

This is old technology. I wanted to replace one I had been using successfully for years but was a little concerned as it has not been manufactured in quite some time. I could have updated my system and looked for something more up to date but decided just to try to replace what had been working so well. Ordered this and am very please as it was exactly what I wanted and worked great. Setup was easy but I did have the supporting software already on my computer and have no idea if it is still available.

This is one of the last good products out of apple doesn’t require a cable to plug it to the wall. I purchase this because I didn’t have good Wi-Fi signal in my backyard. Now I do. I would recommend this to any friend who has an airport extreme base station in their home and wants to extend their Wi-Fi signal. This little device also be extended using the same product, One as a router and the other one as an extension. To top it off you can stream music and it has a headphone plug-in so you can connect a speaker. It’s a win-win. I got it for 20 bucks. The airport has regular and optical audio output for use with airplay. What else has that? The airport has the ability to print wirelessly. Setup is so easy. nothing works better. Get yours while you can, Apple has disbanded the airport team and we cant be sure they will keep making these. Excellent way to extend your Apple Airport Extreme router

Simple to configure and it is rock solid. However, don't expect to get super high data rates when the device is too far away from the main router unless you have it plugged into an ethernet cable.
