In the world of portable music, orange crates full of LPs were the defacto standard for DJ's in the mid-70s and from what I hear, that may be coming back....but in the interim, DJs needed reliable access to many more songs as modern music progressed.
Enter the iPod classic. 160GB of storage space in a neat little package. Add Numark's iDJ2 mixer and you've got a very compact, powerful system to mix music for any event. Add a second iPod Classic as a backup and as a professional DJ you have a redundancy.
Many DJs are using laptop computers - and that's fine - but I'd rather keep things as least complex as possible and the sound card in most laptops doesn't do the music any favors. Also, disk storage space is now inexpensive enough that the use of mp3 format should be outlawed and "lossless" or "wav" should be the standard. The big IPod classic permits using the Apple Lossless standard to music to keep the proper quality.

Ipod classic

After a rough start as the unit would not load my music as received I managed to reload all the software from Apple and after a couple of trys everything was working. Sure hope it stays that way as it took over two hours of fooling around to get everything working as it should.Read full review

It's new classic ipod just as described. Everybody knows what an ipod is and everybody knows that 160 gig is
huge. I would guess that a lot of pirates out there can fill this ipod with music fairly easily but if you are paying for you music track for track then you'll need Bill Gates checkbook to fill this thing up. If you had a 160 gigs on 45 rpm recorsds they would fill the astrodome. If the 160 gig were on cd's it would still be a lot. This is an excellent buy for a dj.Read full review

No battery life at all.
