This is a great razor!
I used a Gillette Sensor for years. I went to the store the other day to purchase blades. They have quit selling them and are pushing the new 3 to 5 blade "wonder razors" whose replacement blades are super expensive. Two blades were silly, more than that are ridiculous. How studid do these companies think we are? The 5 blade ones barely fit on your entire face. I bought this razor and some blades. This razor is remarkably easy to use, shaves close and comfortable, is a quality tool, and my first shave with it produced no bleeding! I am never looking back! 5 Blades....Wahh, haaa hhaaa....Give me a break!Read full review

Gets the job done but not the smoothests...
I have been using this razor for a few days, maybe too short time to write a review but here it goes. I have tried it with different blades and while it gets the job done I find it uncomfortable on my skin, both during and after shaving. It does not feel smooth. Pros: Weight, size and balance and looks durable. Cons: a bit harsh on the skin, blade loading needs manual adjustments sometimes in my sample (I find that screwing the knob slowly with the head upwards helps...but even some cheap Chinese ones get it right all the time). I find that the top cap seems to have a small defect or maybe it's just not the best tolerances, because even though the blade edges are parallel to the safety bar and seemingly at the same distance from it, there is a bit more blade exposure in one corner so the blade looks uneven on one side only, but I don't feel a difference on the skin. The screw is a new design now, flat on two sides and apparently all zamak, which may be a potential problem in the long term (as with the Edwin Jagger 89). I think now a days there are better choices in the same price range, go check "leisureguy" list of recommended razors, for instance. FWIW, so far I can't say I recommend it.Read full review

Merkur 34C HD Short and Simple Review
I have used a Merkur razor for 20 years. There are not many products anymore so thoughtfully engineered and built with this level of quality. I recently replaced my travel razor with a Merkur model similar to the 34C and liked it a great deal. As the price point on the 34C was agreeable, I thought I would purchase one to try and possibly replace my home Merkur razor for a less aggressive shave. It has been a revelation and my facial skin has reacted well. Although this razor is not adjustable you can control the level of aggressiveness in your shave by the blade you use. I use a Derby blade which suits me well for a coarse but not thick beard. I have used a Feather blade and if I had a thicker beard, this blade would be aggressive enough I believe.
If you want a high-quality razor that will deliver a smooth nonirritating shave daily, you will be pleased. The HD in the model number is for “heavy duty” and this meets the description. Yet the device is relatively light and the short handle prevents you from applying unnecessary pressure and the closed comb configuration prevents your shave from turning into a crime scene.
Any Merkur razor is a solid choice but what we men are less educated about is the type of tool: handle length, blade exposure, comb type etc. in the Merkur toolbox that will work best. If you choose Merkur, do your research to find the best fit for your beard and buy a quality blade to put in it and neither your face nor your wallet will be disappointed.

Why have I been buying disposable blades all these years? The Merkur 34c is GREAT!!!
First time user of a safety razor. I LOVE it. I can't believe I've been buying disposable razors for 30 years. Really easy to shave with. I used a lot of caution at first because of my thought of getting cut. But within a week I was totally comfortable with the Merkur. It the only saftey razor I've used. For a casual shaver like myself, this could be a lifetime razor. Better shave and way cheaper blades. Watch videos on how to prep the face before shaving. I don't go all out like some saftey razor fans do. I put lotion on my face right after a shower and then use traditional over-the-counter shaving cream. Works fine. Read full review

Must Have Safety Razor!!!
One of the best safety razors on the market, a must have for beginners and seasonal wet shavers. I just bought another safety razor for my father as a gift for fathers day, and I know he is going to love it! The blade that comes with the safety razor is very high quality, but for a big pack of these blades there are definitely cheaper and same quality blades out there. If your looking into buying this safety razor, I highly recommend buying one and convince others to as well.Read full review

Absolutely Perfect for me!
After a couple years of DE blade shaving. A Microtouch was my first one and never looking back I wanted to step up to a better quality DE shaver but not yet break the bank and decided on this Merkur 34c and couldn't be happier. Good quality, good design and fantastic Tolerance. Absolutely perfect for my needs. I would've easily paid a lot more for this quality shaver. I'm usually not patient and in a rush so I didn't want anything too aggressive. This coupled with an Astra blade works out perfect for me. I can't see getting anything else unless I just get an itch & a couple hundred to spend on something like a Seki or something. Otherwise this could be my last shaver. If you want a high quality solid designed DE shaver that's not real aggressive & sub $40 this is a winner! Read full review

Great quality, nice price.
I paid 32 dollars for a razor that it priced twice that much at the nearby mall. Right from the start when you first hold it you'll know this is a good fit. It's heavy enough to let you know this isn't a disposable razor you're using. It's not overly aggressive like some other razors that make you want to go back to the multi blade shavers. Find a good blade that you like and out it in this razor and you'll look forward to shaving. Thirty-two dollars, delivered to your door, and no tax, and a great razor to boot, now what's wrong with that. Also this is a popular razor for many years so that ought to tell you something. If you get a bad shave try a different blade, because the razor itself is great.Read full review

Merkur HD Double Edge Safety Razor with Bar Guard #178 (34C)
Nice heavy razor, feels good and gives a good shave. It does have a short handle and since I have large hands, it takes a little getting used to. I didn't see in the description that the handle was so short, would have preferred a longer handle.Read full review
