You need this if you plan to use the Philips Hue system to watch movies or play video games and have the lights react to what's going on on the screen. Without this Philips Hue Bridge you will not be able to do anything with the lights other than have them cut on as a beige or white light. Again without the Philips Hue Bridge you cannot use any of the lights to accentuate whatever you're watching.
