If you could only take one lens…

I’ve spent years collecting professional camera equipment. Big heavy full frame DSLR’s and heavy 2.8 lenses. My mindset has always been that I need the best gear to take a good photo.

But, carrying all this stuff around is back breaking. I got this lens so that I could try to carry less gear, and it’s been game changing.

The 18-105 fitted to my Sony A6300, combined, weighs less than my Canon 24/70 2.8 on its own.

I’ve found that this lens and my dated A6300 is my go-to setup for 90% of everything I do now. The lens gives a great deal of flexibility given its huge focal range, and for something like the A6300 which has no in body stabilisation it adds another level to what you can capture.

The lens is tack sharp, however the only caveat is that it does have a some warping. The centre of the frame does have some barrel distortion, and there is some light vignetting in the corners. You can remove them in Lightroom, but I find the camera lens correction profile can soften that tack sharp image.

I actually like the look of the photos without correction. I’m an advocate of lenses having character. If you’re looking to get an identical photo from any lens you use which is tack sharp with no distortion across the entire frame then this perhaps is not the lens for you.

For me, the lens performs best in its f8 to f11 range. Opening it up to f4 produces some nice Bokeh but the images are noticeably softer when pixel peeping.

If you’re looking for a lightweight versatile lens for day to day photography then this is an incredible lens for the price. If you need something that performs in low light or something which is a little more scientific with regards to the slight barrel distortion this lens produces, then perhaps there are better but more expensive options for you.

It’s not a replacement for all of my expensive gear. It’s not that much of a unicorn. But for a lightweight run and gun lens this gets more use than any of my other equipment.

The versatility and the price point make this a 5/5 for me. If I was being harsh I’d drop to a 4/5 on image quality just for to the barrel distortion, but for the price that’s an acceptable hitch for me.

Sony refurbished lens

This is an excellent E-mount APS-C lens. The range of focal lengths covered makes this a good candidate for your only lens. In my experience once you go much longer than this the quality drops off. This is a good compromise between size and light gathering. The constant F4 along with the image stabilization allows for a reasonable low light capability.
I cannot see any serious faults with the image quality. I can see issues with the standard kit lens although the kit lens is not as bad as some people say. In my opinion it is far superior to several 3rd part prime lenses I have used. It handles well and the Grade A version I purchased looks like new.
I use it on an A6300 and it is a good match if a little bulky. It does not have any fancy features apart from the power zoom. But this would put the price up.
I highly rate this lens for my purposes.

Sony E PZ 18-105mm f/4 G lens a great all round performer

An overall superb performer, quick and silent autofocus matched with good resolving capabilities optically. Well deserved G ranking optic. A tad large in bulk, but as the zooming function is internal no extra imbalance is imposed by any lens extensionRead full review

This is a great lens

I have read many reviews before I bought this lens as it is not a cheap investment. But it is worth it. This is a fantastic lens, extremely sharp and highly versatile with the 18-105 focal length. I fully recommend this lens. Its the only one I take on my travel trips as it covers 90% of everything I need. Only when I know that space is very limited (like Venice or other small Mediterranean town) will I take the Sony 10-18mm as well. Read full review

A very good replacement for the normal kit lens 16-50

The images are sharp. The focus is smooth, so you can adjust it to the point where you want.

Cons: It is a bit big and heavy for an A6000.

Silent power zoom lens

Great for video recording and photographs used with my Sony A6000, basically a good all rounder

Superior images when compared with a third party lens.

Much better contrast and depth to the pictures. I lost 100 mm in zoom but the pictures are worth it and I can crop to still produce an equivalent picture.

Nice lens :)

AF is great, sharpnes is great, color is (maybe) little cold (but that is O.K.) and image stabilization is super. Is not cheap (relatively) but I strongly recommend it.
