Premuim radio, premuim sound
This radio has very good quality sound and that is the core function that it needs to get right and it does this easily. The unit is nicely designed with an understated look. The functions are good although some improvement could be made navigating files on USB devices. It's a good Sony product, but it's not Bose!
This is no simple plastic box sound device. It feels substantial, with hope that the speakers have good magnetic components to give it the oomph required. The sound stage is capable of filling a mid-sized room, though the bass is still a bit shy compared with the likes of Bose or a UE Boom product. There are simulated wide-stereo modes, but I couldn't tell the difference.
Where it shines against speaker only choices is the full features available including DAB+ and FM radio, Bluetooth, CD Player and USB/Line IN capabilities. The interface is very simple, but that means some of the functions from the small LED information display are difficult to understand. The operating manual is very basic. If you are technically challenged and want to delve into the advanced features, make sure you have a friend who can help you.
The major disadvantage compared to these portable speakers is that this unit only works of AC electricity. No rechargeable or replaceable batteries can be used.
In summary: if you buy this with a 20% eBay discount, then it's an "excellent" buy. Otherwise, it's a "good" buy for the normal selling price and will give you more bang for buck than a simple portable Bluetooth speaker.Read full review
