Classic Film A Treat
Very enjoyable movie, especially having read a couple books about it. Disagree with those who call it racist or that the character played by John Wayne is racist. It seems if someone rapes, tortures and murders your family that's good enough reason to hate them.
One of the wonderful things about this film is the camera angles director John Ford uses, especially in the vast panorama of Monument Valley. Also the long takes Ford used, unlike many movies today, which are made up of many short takes. Ford also doesn't use many closeups, preferring a wide-angle shot of the scene.
In one scene shot in Canada where it shows a cavalry troop crossing a frosty river, headlights from a vehicle can be seen moving from left to right in the background, which of course doesn't fit in the scene. But Ford used it anyway.
A young (16-yr-old) Natalie Wood plays the role of the pioneer girl abducted by Indians. The girl in the true story was a blue-eyed blonde, which of course Natalie wasn't. But that in no way detracts from the story because most viewers won't know the true story.
One of John Wayne's best performances and one of the greatest, if not the best, of the westerns ever made. (Some critics/observers say, not my idea.)Read full review

The Searchers/John Wayne
If you're a John Wayne fan, this is a good one to watch. Great story line, based on some facts. Even has Natalie Woods in it. Lots of Indians, as well. Really enjoyed the movie...

"The Searchers" one of the best westerns ever made
Always loved this movie Saw it when it first came out 1956 Am an old codger. Only one movie I like more now which is "Lonesome Dove". Am an old cowboy myself and these two are the best for realism and capturing the spirit of those times.Read full review
