Getting the SIM card ahead is really helpful because I can let people know my number ahead of time. 3 is a good service as well. Card lets you sign up for the 3-2-1 service - now not available directly from THREE

THREE seem to have stopped offering the 3-2-1 service. This is the cheapest Pay As You Go offering for light users I know of, but it seems it is on the way out.
