Stalingrad Captivating Guide Battle Stalingrad I by History Captivating
    06 June 2022
Good, but could have been so much more.
This is more a novice guide to the Battle of Stalingrad. It is brief and lacks the depth to be truly captivating. Also, while the battle of Stalingrad is a large part of the campaign in southern Russia and the Ukraine, the main focal point is the siege of the 6th Army after Operation Uranus which is somewhat glossed over. The book does explode some misconceptions and delivers some interesting, new facts about the battle, but these are rather spoilt by the smug delivery. I would recommend this to someone who was about to embark upon studying the battle, but not to veterans of the subject. Probably the most disappointing aspect of this publication is that it does not bode well for other books in the series.
How to Kill a Panther Tank: Unpublished Scientific Reports from the Second
    05 September 2022
A very good book that could have been great.
This book is very hard core and for the enthusiast or tragic; it is not for the faint-hearted. The content is excellent and presentation very good. While it remains true to the original documentation, the chapter lead-ins are repetitive and could have been done as appendices at the end of the chapters, rather than at the start. An alternative would have been boxing them so that they could be easily skipped by casual readers. One thing lacking which may have been beneficial were author's notes or comments to lead the reader around the book. On the whole I highly recommend this book with the caveats below. Sadly, the book had three failings which are, to say the least, disappointing: Firstly, there is no excuse, with electronic publishing to not have an index. This is a failing of far too many books in recent times and even a basic index would have improved this book immensely. After all, it is a reference book. Secondly, in the Chapter 12 Appendices (from p97) there are extensive tables which contain references to Armour Codes. These are not explained until Chapter 17 "The Armour Report" (p198). Admittedly, this is the title of there first section, but does not appear in the Contents and, as stated before, there is no Index. In the absence of an index an author's note would have been invaluable here. Finally, the number of typos is embarrassing. Again, in these days of electronic authorship, this is unforgivable. Also, the type of typos encountered suggest this is not faithful transcriptional errors of original text. I apologise to the author is this is in fact the case.
What We Do In The Shadows NEW DVD

An enjoyable mockumentary on modern vampires.
This is a well thought out modernisation of the vampire mythos. The characters are well thought out and presented as are the stresses .of house sharing between people from different historical backgrounds. The introduction of a contemporary person to the mix highlights this rather well. There are also interesting insights into the periphery of vampirism: the relationships with werewolves; how minions feel about their situation; age barriers; and that not all vampires are good at all things vampiric! On the down side, the secret society take on things and the undead soiree were not so well done. Overall a well done mockumentary.
