Exactly what I wanted, but...
4 of 6 found this helpful This was exactly what I wanted and performed as advertised. I had to alter the socket a bit, since it was replacing a Core2 Quad processor.
But then Windows 10 happened. It is not compatible with this processor, due to a specific instruction set that the manufacturer did not include with the chip. 64-bit Win 10 looks for this upon installation, and if it does not find it, the installer cannot run. I put the old processor in and installed Win10 with no problems, then swapped processors again and it ran well, but the first time Win10 goes to update (which it constantly does), it hangs again. I can't be popping the chip in and out every day!
Unfortunately, it's not listed as being able to replace a Core2Duo, or I'd put it in another of my spare workstations and get Ubuntu humming a little faster, so it ended up being something I'm unlikely to use, but it was a good deal, and I learned a lot, so it's hard to say the money was "wasted."
Bottom line: If you have a Core2Quad that you're looking to update (which is why this was converted), and you're thinking Linux or some other operating system that isn't bent out of shape over the missing instruction set (Maybe Win10-32 bit doesn't encounter this?), this is a really good deal on a relatively simple upgrade.
