Important Story, Written for a Mass Audience.
It's an important subject, a story which needs to be told. The settings jump around a lot, so it's a LITTLE difficult to remember all the characters and where they are located. My only complaint is that the third person writer seems a little too personally involved with the subject matter--advocating from a particular point-of-view. As a result, he presents the scenarios as though the reader needs to be convinced of the injustice. This is a bit insulting; just sharing the situations with us should move any good-hearted person. If he wanted to be an advocate, he should have written from one (or several of) the character's point(s)-of-view--not in the objective third person. Or, make it a straightforward non-fiction historical record—rather than a story. Maybe this is what is needed to reach a mass audience?

This is MY type of movie!
The Painted Veil is a gem of a movie—beautifully written, brilliantly acted, gorgeously shot. It was made as a labor of love; one can see that the artists were on a strict budget. Nevertheless, they hit a home run and produced a wonderful and enduring work of art. I wish there were more "grown-up" movies like this one. I watch this movie once or twice a year.

    Great Musical, Middling Film.
This is a so-so production of a wonderful musical. The director stripped it of its original New York vibe and made it too "Technicolor Hollywood."
