Excellent History
Both this book, Part 1, and it's companion book, Part 2, are well-written, comprehensive histories of these - 2 of the 3 - famous bomber divisions of "The Mighty Eighth." Please note that Part 1 (Vol. 18) covers the 1st Air Division, Part 2 (Vol. 36) covers the 3rd Air Division, and that the 2nd Air Division is covered in a seperate book about the B-24s they flew. Unfortunately, the publisher hasn't made this clear due to their numbering system and titles, so you may, as I did, purchase the wrong book at first. I ended up keeping both, since they are of such top quality in terms of text and pictures. My only complaint is that this book heavily emphasizes the early years of the war and barely touches upon the last year or so during which the most number of sorties were flown. Yes, that period was less dramatic than 1943 when the 8th suffered it's worst losses, but information about the missions my uncle flew on, for example, are scantly covered. This imbalance was unexpected, but these books do not pretend to be encyclopediac. However, they are an absolute must for any library on the subject and belong with the author's other great tomes on the the war, the Eighth, and the B-17.
