Laud Humphreys: Prophet of Homosexuality and Sociology

Praise the Laud!
A singular book, to say the least! No doubt Humphreys' book "Tea Room Trade" was important as ground breaking stuff in the '60s, yet one wonders just how much researching it was an aid to exploiting Humphreys' own homosexuality, and if so, why not! Reading much of it now, it is hard to keep a straight face; when, for example a more than plausable explanation is given for the lack of dialogue between guys having oral sex - along the lines of at least one of them will not be able to use his mouth for speaking! Smirk! I suppose that we are better off being aware of some of the sorts of data that Humphreys was able to glean during his research for "Tea Room Trade", although treating some of it in the dry social-scientific manner raised more than just a few chuckles.
This book fills in the background of the man and his world to a certain degree, although there was clearly scant information about the young Laud, and much of his early career. The reader is, however grateful for what is told about this extraordinary and "cult" author, and much of the book is taken up by reproductions of FBI files and these are not without interest, and serve to remind us how free by comparison the western world is now.
