Probably the best medium price General text you can get about THe History and development of Art.
Gombrich"s Story of Art is the standard text that used to be on the Higher School Certificate Curricuum. when I went to High School in the 70's. I dont think there is a more comprehensive general Text if you want a good overview of the History of Art, albeit (generally European).Easy to read and a good historical reference book that is well set out and includes numerous Photos.
