A clever study of loneliness, life and love
I saw most of this film on TV and found it fascinating, but unfortunately missed the beginning. Rather than rent it, I bought the DVD on eBay (just as cheap, and I have it to keep!). If you want a complex plot with plenty of action, this is not the film for you, but if you're intrigued by contrasts (such as Japan's frantic, ultra-modern lifestyle and its serene, ancient traditions; or the completely different backgrounds of the two main characters; or how a person can be lonely in a city teeming with people), then you will probably enjoy this film. What I particularly liked was how the relationship between Bob Harris (played by Bill Murray), an ageing and fading movie star in Tokyo filming a whisky advert, who's virtually a stranger to his wife and children back home, and Charlotte (Scarlett Johannson) the neglected young wife of a professional photographer, begins and then develops. It's witty, and also very true to life, because something similar (albeit on a much lesser scale) happened to me while away from home at a conference in a strange foreign country. What I particularly liked was the strong but innocent bond that develops between the two characters (no jumping into bed with each other as is so often the norm with many films), and the questions it raised as to whether, if or when they go their separate ways, their respective marriages will not only survive but become stronger. Bill Murray is well cast as the tired celebrity bewildered by the language, culture and pace of life in Japan, and Scarlett Johannson aptly portrays the fresh young girl who is slightly naive, but, just like Bill, is seeking to find some deeper meaning to life. For me this is a film that is clever, witty, poignant, heart-warming... and brilliant!

I-Star DAB Radio Portable RechargeableDAB/DAB+/FM LCD Display Preset 2 Alarms
    13 September 2022
    Rather disappointing
I bought this radio (P/N: 90070PI, right in picture) to replace an earlier model (P/N: PI00679, left in picture), in which, after 5 years' use I was no longer able to charge the internal battery, as the micro-USB socket had become internally distorted and would no longer connect (the newer radio uses the same connectors). Although the newer model has a sleeker, less angular profile, I find that in DAB/DAB+ mode the reception is often inferior, as the unit is much more susceptible to the presence or position of one's own body or that of another person, and not necessarily in the same room. This gives rise to the 'bubbling' effect on DAB, and the sound can even cut out completely. It also varies from place to place, so that, for instance, whereas I generally get good reception on, say, Classic FM, downstairs, for some reason it's worse upstairs (I would have expected the reverse) and I have to switch to FM mode. Thus I am rather disappointed in this radio's performance.
"Private Eyes" Colemanballs: No. 3, , Used; Good Book

If you want a good laugh
The Colemanballs series of books has always been a source of great amusement, as well as amazement at the verbal gaffes perpetrated in particular by sports commentators, as well as those in other walks of life. The funny, often unintentional, comments frequently have me laughing out loud and asking, 'Did they really say that?'! I would heartily recommend this and the rest of the series for anyone who wants something to bring good cheer on a bad day, or to brighten a good one even more.
